This well-painted 19th century thangka depicts a three-headed tantric "Heruka" in "yab-yum" with his shakti. The figure is probably Vajrakila heruka, although I leave it to the more knowledgeable ones among you to decide the identity. The painting measures 10" X 13" and is free of any restoration or re-painting. In need of a cleaning.

Ca. late 1800s

This male figure, molded in the manner of the English Staffordshire tradition, carries a swooning lady on his shoulders, with a snake hanging from his neck. Facial features and clothing details are painted in colorful overglaze enamels. On the base is a factory mark in an oval cartouche. There is some wear, soiling, and minor glazing flaws, but no repairs or damages.

An Mughal Indian Brass Water Flask, Surai. The elegant vessel with a screw top. Heavily cast and with turned decoration. Deccan, N India 19thc. Height: 11 3/4" (29.8 cm). Condition; very good, has been polished.

A lovely smaller but massive heavy bronze figure of a seated deity, probably Sri Devi / Lakshmi, holding implements and tall headdress and a breast band around her sizable attributes, South Indian, perhaps Tamil Nadu, c. 17th.-18th. century or earlier.

Size: 86 mm. tall and weighing a hefty 342 grams.

Condition: Choice Very fine, lovely oold patina, with a fine chestnut brown colour from high copper content.

Very well cast 18-19th century bronze Tara from north India or Nepal. It is 10 ½ inches tall and in very good condition.

Very rare and early piece, nicely cast, finely engraved and with a good patina. The Krishna figure has two silver bracelets on each arm. H. 24 cm. Condition: left index finger restored. 17th / early 18th century votive Indian bronze sculpture depicting Sri Devi - a form of Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Very elegant casting, great patina with subtle green encrustation on the surface, wonderfully worn attesting to its great age. Height 2.3 inches.

Very old mask of Defender of the Buddhist Faith, inspired from the God Mahakala, with a terrifying expression meant to ward off evil spirits. Wood, with nice slightly encrusted glossy dark patina. Himalayan Region, Bhutan or Tibet, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 11" (28 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Very good condition. NOTE: Together with masks # 1-0761 and # 1-0762, this mask was acquired from an old American collection.

17th Century Tibetan Amitabha Thangka, 46.5 x 25.5 inches, 118 x 65 cm. Most of these thangka were photographed through glass frames, so there may be a little blurriness. This thankga was in an exhibition at the University of Texas Art Museum.

19th century Indian bronze cast in the state of Orissa. Depicts Lakshmi wearing loincloth and jewelry standing on a lotus base and holding an oil receptacle (was cast separately and now not present) in front of her, and a handle at the back. Good casting, pleasant patina, nice feel of age to the piece. Height 6 5/8 inches.

18th/19th century small votive Indian bronze sculpture of Nandi - the vehicle of Shiva, or sometimes considered to be a form of Shiva himself. It rests in its usual position wearing rich trappings in front of a Shiva lingam altar, and there is a pile of offerings by his raised foot. Very neat casting and detailing, great patina, compressed dust in crevices and traces of sandalwood paste used during worship. Very good devotional object, wonderful feel of age to the piece. Length 2 1/2 inches.

Late 18th to early 19th century votive Indian bronze sculpture of Rukmini - a consort of Vitthali, who is regarded as a form of Vishnu or Krishna. His name means “standing on a brick”, he is usually shown in characteristic stance with his hands on his hips, he is also known as Vithoba or Panduranga, and is worshipped in particular in Pandharpur, not far from Bombay. She is shown with the same hand positioning, very good casting and sharp detailing - see her jewelry...

A large powerful and deep repousse Tibetan piece with features raised almost 5/8", measuring 4-1/4" in height by X 3-3/4" in width. In excellent condition with complete original gilding intact. Minor loss to the flaming aureole. Excellent detail. A substantial early depiction of a great subject.

Beautifully decorated book cover, of very refined gilded hammered copper on wood, with, on one side, two dragons with the "Ratna", or "Mani" (the Jewel of the Buddhist doctrine) in the middle, surrounded by stylised cloud motifs and framed in lotus design. On the other side, three handpainted Buddhist figures representing Manjushri, Chenresig and the Mahakala. These paintings have withstood the test of time a little less well than the front side...

Beautiful antique Tibetan gilt bronze and copper repouse statue of the bodhisatva Avalokeieshvara, modeled with multiple heads protruding from the top of head, and countless arms in a circular nimbus edged with flames, holding prayer beads, a lotus, a conch shell and other attributes, beautifully modeled features, 19th century. Early 19th century Sino-Tibetan thangka depicting Agni on his mount - a ram, and holding a pot of water in one hand and rosary beads in the other. Very uncommon image: Agni was initially the God of fire in Hinduism (see the pit of flames that the ram is running on), but was incorporated into Buddhism as one of the twelve Devas (guardian deities found in or around Buddhist shrines) and is considered to be the guardian of the Southeast. Rare Tibetan antique skull drum called a damaru (or damru). Two skulls make up the two sided drum connected in the middle. Two small beads at the end of thin cords attached in the center beat the drum when it held upright and twisted. A long silk sash (chopen) decorated with two tassels and auspicious symbols hangs from the center. The damaru is a sacred instrument adopted from the Hindu tantric practices of ancient India...

Indian demon chaser mask in bronze repousse from Karnataka in five parts: head, headband, ears and a tube within the head to permit the mounting on a pole. Backside with red paint. Antique, Indo-Persian, Indian lacquered hide shield Dhal Separ 18th century, Islamic Mughal India.

The shield is of a circular convex form, made of black lacquered buffalo hide, hand-painted in raised gilt polychrome, with four floral sprays pointing towards the center, marked by a round medallion with floral arabesques, surrounded by four gilded solid silver domed bosses with pierced collars.

The upper part is set with a gilded, solid silver, half-moon crescent.

Impressive Blackstone stele of Surya the Sungod, Pala period, 10th.-11th. cent. AD.

A carving in grey-black stone depicting Surya holding lotuses, riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, each depicting a day of the week and named after the seven meters of Sanskrit prosody, Gayatri, Brihati, Ushnih, Jagati, Trishtubha, Anushtubha and Pankti. His charioteer is Arun, the dawn, brother of Garuda and he has no legs.

He is flanked by the two goddesses of dawn, Usha and Pratyusha ...
