It is not easy to stumble upon a vintage Los Ballesteros carved "mask" ring but when one does find an example, what a feast it is! There is nothing "timid" about this piece. The philosophy here is big, bold and beautiful and I believe that the Los Ballesteros workshop accomplished all this monumentality in the most amazing, masterful, and eye-pleasing way. BeautifulIy crafted in the Renaissance Revival style, this wonderful footed bronze coffer has a rich variety of scenes on all sides and on top, and is lined with dark blue twill fabric.
The case measures 10 3/8" x 6 3/4", x 5 1/4" high, and sits on four pad feet in the shape of fierce animal heads that extend about 1/2" out from each corner.
The top panel depicts a hunting scene, set in a lush forest with flowers and birds, 6 figures, 8 dogs, and a woman riding a unicorn sidesaddle...

In my opinion one of the most talented Taxco maestros, Felipe Martinez worked with Hubert Harmon for a brief period in the 1940s (see Hougart, Little Book of Mexican silver, p. 105) and created some of the most amazing jewelry in Taxco's heyday. Isezaki Mitsuru was born in 1934 in the well-known family of Bizen potters. His younger brother Isezaki Jun (b.1936) is the Living National Treasure since 2004.
Mr. Isezaki holds the Intangible Cultural Property title since 1998.
Bizen ware was originally produced in Imbe village of Bizen province since Kamakura period of 14th century.
