An opportunity to acquire a Northern Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1127) kiln saggar still containing its Qingbai porcelain bowl, excavated from a kiln site in the Jingdezhen area of Jiangxi province. This is one of a variety of different Qingbai porcelain wares in saggars, mostly bowls and dishes of varying sizes and patterns, that we were very lucky to be able to acquire some time ago and now offer for sale. 

Northern Song...

This very rare small jar was made in the 14th Century during the Yuan Dynasty (1279 - 1368). Although it is clearly from the Jizhou kilns of Northern China it is painted on a porcelain body under a qingbai type of glaze. Usually Jizhou wares are on a stoneware body. The only reference we can find of this type is in "Qingbai Wares...

This attractive porcelain dish was made in the second half of the 16th century, during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It is decorated in underglaze blue. The central design features a phoenix standing in a garden. Around the rim are beribboned precious objects and peaches (the peach representing marriage as well as immortality and springtime)...

This pottery vessel was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is made from a reddish pottery and, of course, gets its name from its cover that depicts seventeen peaks, interspersed with floral and small circular patterns. The vessel stands on three sturdy legs, each in the form of a bear. Its outer wall is further decorated with a pair of taotie mask handles and bands of surrounding grooves...

This blue and white porcelain bowl was made in the 16th century. It is decorated in underglaze blue of good colour, the design featuring birds perched upon blossoming branches. To the base is a seal mark (not translated).

Diameter 12 cm. It is in good condition. There is minor surface wear, some "fritting" of the glaze at the rim edge and a kiln scar at the top of the outer wall...

This rare stoneware bowl was made during the 14th century. It is coated in an apple-green glaze. Although not very clear, round the lower inner surface there appears to be a floral (?) pattern using a glaze-resisting method. There is an unglazed stacking band around the centre, the centre appearing the be coated in a thin yellowish wash...

This "heavily-potted" bowl with a high foot was made in 19th century, during the late Joseon (Choson) Dynasty (AD 1392 - 1910). It is coated all over in a pale grey glaze, that seems to have just the slightest hint of blue in places. Embedded in the glaze around the foot rim are many pieces of kiln grit.

Diameter 13 cm, height 9 cm...

This porcelain jar of globular form was made during the 19th century toward the latter part of the Choson (Joseon) Dynasty. The underglaze blue decoration comprises floral patterns and two bands surrounding the neck. It is quite "heavily-potted" and there are couple of firing bubbles, no doubt due to the thickness of the clay. There is kiln grit embedded within the glaze to the base.

A Fine Japanese Shijo School Drawing by Dozan. Late Edo Period

10 1/2 x 9 1/4 ins. (26.7 x 23.5 cms) This superb Shijo drawing of a woman carrying a ladder and a stool on her head is sealed Dozan, a plainly very accomplished artist whose identity remains a mystery. Several drawings by the artist have come on to the market since the 1960s. At Christies London on 17th. June 1996 an album of 22 similar drawings by the artist were sold for GBP 3680...

This stoneware bowl was made at the Sawankhalok kilns around the 14th - 15th century. It is "heavily-potted" and coated in an attractive and finely-crackled glossy celadon glaze that has just a hint of blue in places...
