Very dramatic deeply concave oval shaped African shield from Ethiopia. The animal hide is scraped free of hair and then placed over a shaped board with protrusions which will allow for greater protection in warding off blows. The edge is tightly rolled and there are added tool marks for heightened decoration. The handle is tied and knotted into place at a slight angle to allow for a more comfortable hold.

Beautiful face of a court lady with natural wood patina with some dark marks suggesting that perhaps this mask has been cleaned. This Chinese pipe is from the Miao Ethnic Minority group in the vicinity of Rong Jiang. My Miao friends insist that this pipe would have been used for smoking tobacco and not opium. Made from silver alloy, the stem design has the two dragons chasing the center pearl.

Japanese plique-a-jour cloisonne enamel vase densely decorated with a bouquet of flowers set against a celadon green background. Chrome rims. Dates from the Occupation period (1945-1960). Measures about 3 3/4"H x 3" diameter. Very good overall condition. There is a faint interior stress crack at the shoulder that cannot be felt (see enlargements 6 and 7). The neck is very slightly tilted.

Obviously these two masks from the Nuo theater belong to the minorities of southern China. They constitute a set probably designed simultaneously by the same artist. One of the masks represents the monk Heshang and the second represents the jester Quintong. These masks date from at least the middle of the 20th century, that is to say about a hundred years. Flames of red flash form the bird resurrected on the side of this large Cloisonne vase by the Ando company of Nagoya; Japan’s premier cloisonne studio. The color is hard to describe, seeming to be lit from within. A combination of wire and wireless design using gold wire with silver rim. Ando mark on base, the vase measures 37 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall, 32 cm (12-1/2 inches) diameter and is in excellent condition. It comes enclosed in a fine, custom made kiri-wood box.

This is a charming lobed shaped tea-pot standing on four small individual feet. On one side it has a painting of a pair of sparrow in a blooming lotus pond. On the other side, it has a poem written on it. Circa. early Chinese Republic period 1940s-1950s.

No hairline crack, glaze fritting, damage, repair or restoration. The tea-pot is in good condition.

The dimension of the tea-pot: The height is 11.7cm, the length is 22cm and the width is 10cm.

At first glance this appears to simply be a large image of a burning tree, however, look again and find the tree like figure is in the from of two entwined lovers, flames leaping from their impassioned bodies. This was likely made as an exhibition work, as it certainly would be difficult to fit into even a large Japanese home. The piece is signed Yoneda Mio, (Yoneda Mionosuke), and likely dates from the 1930s. The canvas measures 49 x 61-1/2 inches (124 x 156 cm) the frame 52-1/2 by 65 inches...

An old silver alloy offering vessel of oblong form, the outside repoussed with two monster masks among scrolls. Base with chiselled symbol. A wonderful ethnographic folk art object, this style of farm animal bell has been used in Thailand for centuries. Hand carved from wood by the herder and tied around the animals neck this traditional bell is hinged (or pegged) in 2 places to allow for a gentle knocking sound. This one was used for a goat and has remnants of the original hand made rope.

This is a great archetype of ghurra, showing an interlace of ropes which local name is netti, so in some areas "Netti" becomes the generic name for Ghurras. This ghurra demonstrates a great carving achievement with incredible signs of use.
