This large and rather colorful kohiki chawan was made by Ogawa Tetsuo a specialist in slips and Korean slipware of which this pot is a classic example. The surface of the teabowl shows off a wide array of colors and visual textures with areas of gohonde fawn spots and a translucent, waxy ash glaze coving the pot. The richness of the surface makes this a rather stunning piece by Ogawa with much more activity than seen in many of his teabowls...

A key figure in the Japanese folk craft movement of the 20th century, Fujita Kyohei is credited with helping to develop a thriving glass-working community within Japan. Best known for his “dream” or “Liuli” boxes—very colorful and skillfully crafted boxes that often incorporated gold and silver leaf into their designs. Here we see a piece that would likely have been crafted earlier in his career but that demonstrates his masterful technique even then...

Karhu printed these invitations for his shows at the Tolman Collection, the Tokyo gallery which has long represented him and his work. These were done in large numbers, about 800, in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This particular print reads "ue mino washi," An Eagle Doesn't Look [Up] Where There is Nothing," a very Zen-like saying. This image is finely framed and is in good condition...
