Little stockinette black doll with button eyes and embroidered nose and mouth. Her mouth is again the straight line across, (what I call a neutral statement), with white embroidered teeth. (I think if I made a cloth doll I would make the doll smiling but so many both black and white dolls have the straight line, I find it interesting.)
She has on an old red and white cotton dress that fits nicely but I am sure is not original. She is cotton stuffed and not so firm that she can sit easily...

This all handsewn little linen doll has the most unusual and expressive embroidered face. A rectangle shaped mouth, fine little stitches for eyes and pupils, curvy stitches for ears and dash lines for hair, all in red floss thread. Very nice Beecher doll by a cottage industry in Elmira NY missionary group from 1893 to 1910. They followed a pattern but each doll is just a little different as the sewing was a group project.. This one has been recovered with black fabric over the original brown fabric. The brown fabric was not that sturdy and is often in fragile condition. Big, heavy rag stuffed cloth doll has big old hands with fingers and thumbs, a great old blue and tan striped ticking body and is just all American through and through. Sometimes dolls look like they don't want to be wearing fufu but something tells me this doll loves the bow in her hair and bustle on the back of her skirt.
