Interesting painting of the Southwest, showing Native Americans at a nocturnal religious ceremony or festival such as Penitente, probably in New Mexico, many candles flickering in the scene also populated with processional crosses. The scene is a city street, depicted in rather bright color, in an impressionist technique; what is quite unusual here is the added medium used, the surface obviously having been worked with wax (I believe this might be called "encaustic" when used in a painting). Although raised and educated in Texas, Joe Dawley moved to New Jersey in the early 1960's where he remained. He painted in the traditional Old Masters style until 1982, when the symptoms of Parkinson's - diagnosed in 1975 - necessitated brain surgery. One of his accolades during that period was being commissioned to paint the official portrait of Mother Seton for the canonization in 1976. Af...

Early 20th century Dutch harbor scene by Gerard Wiegman (1875-1964). The painting depicts a large cargo ship moored at harbor and surrounded by a variety of smaller ships, fishing boats and tugs. This choice of coloring suggests the obvious industrial nature of this unidentified harbor. The paint was primarily applied with broad brushstrokes, but a thicker impas...

Watercolor and gouache on paper of a backwater creek or lake surrounded by feathery trees, 12 1/2" by 19 1/2" plus 3 1/2" of mat and frame, unsigned, most likely American. The work is in very good shape save for some age browning of the paper most visible by comparing to the top inch or so which evidently at one time was hidden under a mat. The artist was obviously skilled in watercolor. A very peaceful scene for your wall.
