This major painting is by Manuel Rodriguez, one of the founders of Philippine modernism. It depicts a Muslim river festival in the south of the country, probably Cotabato in Mindanao. Rodriguez was born in Cebu in 1912, the son of an engraver and goldsmith, and studied art first of all at the University of the Philippines and later in New York and Paris.
