This is a very attractive impressionist work, 18" by 23 3/4" (24" by 29" as framed), unsigned, the subject a line of trees, fading sunlight filtering through them, all in a green and brown palette that seems very Arts and Crafts in feeling. I think the work was likely executed in the 1940's or thereabouts. The stretcher is new, and I am trying to decide if the painting has been lined on a newer canvas...

It also bears a gallery label with the name of the artist, the title, the medium, and the size of the painting (11" by 14", 12 1/2" by 15 1/2" in its original frame). Joan Thorne is an important contemporary New York-based American artist who describes her art as "metaphysical abstraction"...

Interesting painting of the Southwest, showing Native Americans at a nocturnal religious ceremony or festival such as Penitente, probably in New Mexico, many candles flickering in the scene also populated with processional crosses. The blues of the nocturne dominate the composition, and the yellow crosses and many candles receding into the distance complete this most agreeable painting. An American impressionist coastal seascape painting on the rough side of a Masonite panel, 12" by 16" (19" by 22 1/2" in quality gold frame), signed at lower right by artist Erna Gruenbaum. Oddly, considering the quality, there is no listing of an artist by this name. The painting probably dates to the 1950's or thereabouts. The frame has very light wear but retains its value.
