867 RUSSIAN ICON, Christ, oil on panel, 8x10” Christ

Traditional watercolor still life of roses, yellow daffodils and maybe some dogwood, arranged in a white vase against a sketchily defined background, 20" by 22 1/2" (27" by 30 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, though a number "1432" appears at lower right corner under the mat (I do NOT think it says 1932). The paper was laid on a board long ago. I think this dates to the 1940's or so; the hand was trained. Condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall.

Oil on board Currier and Ives style winter landscape viewed from birds eye perspective, 18 1/2" by 24 1/2", 23" by 28 1/4" framed, unsigned, circa 1900, or possibly even earlier, painted in a primitive hand. The painting is charming and a definite folk art piece. Note the glowing windows of the inviting church on this winter day, there are two figures at left that look positively Dickensian, and the sled and figures show good detail...

A nicely executed watercolor and gouache painting of Notre Dame Cathedral as seen from the east, the view captured on an atmospheric, cloudy gray day. The scene includes fishermen and other tiny figures at left. At lower right the artist signed rather illegibly; it could possibly read "Pierre" or "Renee", and after that it becomes more difficult to decipher, but "51 PARIS" is at the end (possibly "54")...

A gouache on paper painting of Valletta, the historic, ancient capital of the Mediterranean island of Malta, 4 3/4" by 6 1/2" (9" by 10 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by the noted artist of Malta, VINCENZO d'ESPOSITO (1886-1946). Found in far northern Vermont in the course of an art buying trip some years ago, is this unframed 20" by 16" oil on canvas portrait of a man, apparently signed "Shoelman" at lower right and signed again and dated on the reverse (possibly, 1806, though, more likely, 1846, considering the style---the digit likely a "4"). I acquired the painting near Cambridge/Jeffersonville not far from the Canadian border...

This painting is something of a mystery, in that it depicts a fantastic classic castle on a hill, obviously in the Old World, a donkey pulling a card in the foreground......yet, there is a modernity to the work, especially in the somewhat cubist handling of the lines of the architecture, but, also, there's modernity in the entire structure of the image. Watercolor on quality paper, 7 3/4" by 11", 10 1/4" by 13 3/4" as framed, the subject the famous and iconic symbol of the Santa Fe and Taos region of northern New Mexico, the sanctuary near the town of Chimayo. The art is titled at lower left margin and dated there 2004, and signed "Benke" or similar at lower right. Condition is excellent. A decorative little item if you're looking for something that reminds you of your trip to that scenic and history-filled region of the country.
