Daniel Tretiak, after publishing his book The Life and Works of Haku Maki in 2007, found that he had more to say about prints as they came into his life. And so, from time to time, he wrote Research Notes and published them on this site.
For Note 1, he wrote the following:
This is a collage of Maki prints depicting the tokkuri (sake bottle). We have added images of most of the prints here. Enjoy. Be Sure to CLICK Above as directed, please.
This note was written by Robert Craft and discusses Maki's use of an archaic form of Chinese script called seal script.
A Karl (Carl) Schultheiss numbered etching pre 1931. This is a 8-3/4" x 7-1/4" numbered, limited closed edition engraving titled "ANGERS, CATHEDRALE" by the German engraver Karl (Carl) Max Schultheiss (1885-1961). Born in Germany, he moved to the U.S. in the 1930s, where he had a 1938 exhibition of his etchings at the Art Institute of Chicago...
Collection 30 is one of the many striking prints of ceramics that fascinated Maki from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Maki’s ceramic prints conveyed the “feel” of the bowls or cups or wine vessels—a sense of how it would feel if touched was imparted to the viewer through his ability to suggest texture in his prints...

Old photo of a seaside Greek temple with Doric columns, 10" by 14" (17" by 20 1/2" in metal framing with mat). I am not a specialist in vintage photography, but this seems to have some age. There is some silvering at lower right. The print might have been created from an old negative with some damage as there are some white spots in the print that are not damage to the print itself----I imagine that this is disturbance on the original negative. The mat has a little soiling or moisture staini...

This is a work by highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). Nason was a Boston-born artist who by the late 1920's had taught himself the fine art of creating prints in the wood engraving process. This process was popular for illustrating books in the 19th century but by the twentieth it had fallen from favor. He revived the medium and truly excelled at it. By the early 1930's he had been exhibited at Boston's prestigious landmark Goodspeeds book store. His reputat...
In 1976 Haku Maki did his eight-volume San Mon Ban--a total of 96 different embossed images. These included many items Maki had just used, would use soon and used later. I first show images of two prints like those in San Mon Ban but slightly larger. Then two images of insects in San Mon Ban and then 4 images of insects long hidden in my archives--even to me. These might all be called Maki Lite.
The two shown here are
Insect 2 Fleas; Insect 3 ants
There is also a simple Insect and an...

Born in Georgia, he received some early art education in Panama, where his f...
This is an example of the rare and desirable Currier print "Woodcock Shooting", 1852, measuring 14 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 20 1/4" by 25" as framed. Some of these are offered in fine print shops to $4,000 if in excellent condition. This one at first glance appears to be one of those---the print looks to the unaided eye to be in truly excellent condition---but upon closer examination, one can see that it has suffered major abuse in its lifetime, unusual even by the standards of abuse to...
THREE hand colored French 19th century prints featuring early-day Japanese soldiers, each 9 1/4" by 6 3/8" inside the faded old violet mats, to which each is simply taped at top edge. The prints are unframed. Two have a dark foxing mark, and all are of sufficient age to have acquired the signs of age---paper toning, slight handling creases and so forth. Fresh mats and frames will display them properly and preserve them for another 150 or so years. When viewed at an angle one can see the use ...
Lithograph on paper of a World War I soldier, 12" by 9 1/4" inside the mat (20" by 17" framed), signed and dated in the plate 1915, by the important Swiss-born artist THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923). Steinlen was born in Lausanne on Lake Geneva in 1859. After training at a textile mill in eastern France, he moved to Paris and the Montmartre literary and art scene. He found the scene creatively nourishing, and went on to spend most of the rest of his life there. Steinlen interacted w...
Large folio size (19 1/2" by 24" inside the mat, 24 1/2" by 20" as framed) hand colored 19th century original vintage lithograph print (1867), titled at bottom "Horses at the Ford" by the iconic American print makers Currier and Ives. A great piece of Americana, this print is apparently rather scarce. Hand coloring in various shades of green, mostly, makes for a most attractive example. I have had an opportunity to examine this out of the frame. It exhibits normal browning, and there are old...
