Around 1960 Haku Maki probably did the Ox as a woodblock print. He was then a young artist in Tokyo. He may have done some Ox images before James Michener did his now wellknown book, but probably not many: 510 were used in the book The Modern Japanese Print". The prints of Japanese artists included in the book are large-ish, it is not embossed...

Yuji Abe passed away in Tokyo on 15 May. Japan art leader Abe-san was 86 He was a dean of the modern a Japanese print world from his base at Yoseido Gallery in Ginza. He tutored many young and not so young gaijin to learn about Japanese modern prints He was a dashing suave figure in his 50s. He had been in ill health for a number of years I attach a recently restored 1961 Maki print he may have handled way back then. This print was done 50 years ago...

Original monotype by Matt Phillips (American, born in 1927 in New York City). Signed "Phillips" and dated '82 in pencil l.r. Also indistinctly titled or dedicated l.l. ("For Dede"?) 4 1/2" by 4 1/4" image alone. The full sheet measures roughly 12" by 12". In original never framed condition. Matt Phillips is a master printmaker who taught in Paris, and at Bard College in NYC. He is credited with reviving the monotype technique in the second half of the 20th century...

A pen and ink print signed W.V.V.T in the lower right corner. There is a small white spot in the right area (see photos) and dark spot above that... there is also rippling in the upper left corner-- the paper may have been pasted to a background but we have not examined it out of the frame. 12" x 16"

From our European Collection, a very good 17th century copper plate engraving, most likely English circa 1650-1700, depicting a Chinese official accompanied by his entourage, with subjects kowtowing in the foreground and a crowd of spectators to the rear.

Size and Condition: 7 inches by 5 1/4 inches, very well preserved with only slight creasing.

Haku Maki was a major creative Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century. His major output from 1965 to 1990 consisted to several different themes of prints Kanji was the main theme for the first 15 years of that period...

One of Maki’s favorite themes was the image shown here. Some outstanding ones are shown in the listing. I reckon Maki did about 25 different prints with the theme Child. Several little children can be seen swimming in the image in frame 9. The child in the right of this list panel is the image imprinted in the cover of Festive Wine, to which Maki contributed 21 images in 1969.

A Fumio Tamura 1969 Nokemono framed litho print 2/7. This evocative semi-erotic colour lithograph print entitled "Nokemono" (translated from Japanese - outcast) was produced in 1969 by Fumio Tamura (Japan, 1941-). Fumio Tamura was born in the Nagano prefecture, and he graduated from Tokyo Art College in 1968, so this 1969 litho dates from early in his career. It is in a metal frame, and it measures 24-1/2" x 21", with an image size of 18" x 14-1/2". It is a very small edition issue, inscribed...
