A finely carved Chinese agate in the form of a popular motif often seen in Tibet which is the windhorse. The use of Tibetan motifs in Chinese arts began during the Ming dynasty with patronage of the Tibetan high lamas and continued onwards into the Qing Dynasty. The windhorse is carrying a pecha or sutra text, a signature motif often found on windhorses. The stylized ribbons and the waves are done in the Chinese style. DESCRIPTION: A beautifully painted, very large Mexican charger (or platter) with a dark blue outer rim framing two birds perched in a tree, surrounded by scrolling green foliage, large flowers and yellow fruit. Dating from the 1960's, on the reverse is written "Mexico"; the back is pierced with holes for hanging. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.
