The creator of this lovely Hagi chawan, Hirose Tanga (b. 1939) is the master-potter of Tenpozan kiln in the city of Hagi. When I acquired my first tea bowl by this artist it reminded me of bowls produced by Yoshida Shuen (apprenticed under NLT Miwa Kyusetsu). As it turns out, Yoshida worked alongside Hirose in establishing Tenpozan and in training young potters in the art of “Oni” Hagi which utilizes a rough textured clay and a milky translucent glaze...

A rare and very finely decorated Chinese porcelain vase depicting a flowering peony shrub painted with fencai/famille rose enamels.

On the base is the iron red four character mark "Shen de tang zhi" -the "Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue" which was located in the Old Summer Palace, the Yuanmingyuan, which was destroyed by European troops in 1860. The mark was used during the Kangxi and Daoguang reigns and also during the Republic period (1912-1948) when we believe this vase was made...

Hagi-yaki has a tradition stretching back over 400 years and is prized for its subdued colors and classical features, especially the glazing, which is often clear and vivid. The natural ash Hagi glaze of this piece gives it a mellow yet robust feel. In addition, the split wari-kodai at the base together with the asymmetrical hand-molded shape offers the user a unique tactile experience The sides of the bowl show pale ash, ivory, and faint hints of lavender...

Condition: Tape has been removed from the back. Those areas as well as a crease at the right edge have been reinforced by a conservator. Slight fading.

Chinese round table of natural gnarled, twisted hardwood roots, and a transparent russet lacquer. The table is constructed in two parts- The trunk-like pedestal base and the rooted edge, round top. This type of natural root furniture goes back to the 12th century aesthetic. Here is an example of the round center table produced during the Republic period, bearing the colonial form true to the Victorian Era.

Oval shaped Japanese red lacquer tray of Daruma with his fly whisk. The back side is black. In very good condition, it measures 15.5 inches by 12".

Indian Jain bronze figure of Vishnu with Lakshmi seated on his knee. Six other figures are present including 2 attendants on the bottom. The figure on the bottom is their friend and vehicle, Garuda. Incised with writing on the base and back.

Circa 1949-1955, this is a very rare Hector Aguilar coffee / tea pot.

I can't find another identical to this. Absolutely collector quality. His signature square handle has two wood inserts. Lid is hinged, spout is curved, and the design is magnificent. No repairs, no dents, dings, dimples. Hinge is strong and perfect.

Weight on this is 33.22 troy ounces, 1,033 grams, so over 2 lbs.

Measures just under 10" tall. Handle to spout is 8"...

Chinese porcelain carved/molded snuff bottle all in white with a pelican standing on one leg among foliage. 4 character Daoguang 1821-50 mark on base.

Design book of Japanese traditional patterns which are originally designed by Katsushika Hokusai (1760?~1849), a notable and prominent Ukiyo-e-shi. The title is "Shin-gata Kommon-cho", a new komon design book. It has a pair of two designs, which are woodblock print, black line in one page and colored in the other and each has a name. 74 patterns in a ciecle. In excellent condition. Chinese scholar rock of an over hanging ying stone, mounted on a carved Suzhou rosewood stand with five cabriole legs and an undulating stretcher. The base is decorated in high relief of lingzhi fungus and swirling clouds. Gongshi, also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks, which are traditionally appreciated by scholars. Gongshi rocks can be any color and contrasting colors are not uncommon...

A Chinese sacrificial-red (ji hong) glazed stem bowl. There is a six-character Da Qing Dao Guang Nian Zhi mark inside the bottom of the stem foot, but it was probably made in 20th Century. There are heavy scratches inside the bowl, no other flaw beside this. Diameter: 7"; height: 4".
