Fine Pair of Tall Chinese Han Dynasty Burnished Pottery Vases

This fine, impressive and very rare pair of pottery vases was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) or possibly a little earlier. They are of a particularly pleasing and elegant form, the wide bodies rising up from the flat bases, then constricting into long slender necks and finally opening up into fairly wide mouths. They are quite "heavily-potted" and made from a dense fine-grained dark grey pottery, the surface o...

Fine Chinese Han Dynasty Glazed Pottery Hu Jar

This attractive pottery jar of "hu" form was made some 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a reddish pottery, coated in a finely-cracked green glaze that varies in thickness. In places it has acquired a silvery iridescence, a result of exposure to moisture during its long burial. There are lightly incised decorative bands surrounding the body in places. To the flat base are the typ...

Very Rare LARGE Chinese Qin Dynasty Pottery Cocoon / Listening Jar with Oxford TL Test

This oversized vessel, in the form of a "cocoon jar", was made during the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC) or possibly a little earlier during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC), but even then by the Qin state. It is made from a fairly high-fired fine-grained grey pottery. The whole of the outer surface of the body is decorated with repeated cord or woven impressions with vertical bands then being made aro...

Fine Tall Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Lady with Oxford TL Test (44cm)

Arguably the most desirable and collectable pottery sculpture from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 – 906) is the female courtier, or "fat lady". This figure is a large and particularly elegant example.

The lady stands upright with her hands clasped together under her voluminous robe. Note also the elaborate hairstyle but most striking are the fine details to her face: simply exquisite! It is made from a buff-col...

A large and very impressive tomb pottery horseman, Chinese, 1368-1644 AD. The type has been thoroughly tested and was burnt approx 500 years ago, placing it in the mid Ming period, c. early-mid 16th. century.

The pottery horseman, a higher-ranking officer, was probably originally equipped with a standard of wood, that has now decayed. He is clad in body armor in blue and torquise and wears a cone- shaped helmet. He is riding a white horse with details in torquise.

A rare to...

This was a 19th century trade sign for a livery. The zinc composition horse head is highly detailed and very dimensional. Along with having a very life like bone structure, he has a kind eye and a wonderful docile expression. Coldpainted in a muted gold finish. In excellent condition for his very old age (minor crack on nose). Measuring an impressive 24” long x 12” wide X 20” deep. What a great piece to have hanging in your place of business or over the fireplace. The next best thing to ta...

A massive bronze (copper tin alloy) vase cast in Han dynasty Hu shape and with Han style Taotie mask handles. The archaistic style decoration is an amalgam of Shang and Zhou dynasty motifs. These consist of upper and lower bands depicting stylized dragons and a central band of large Taotie ("monster"} masks. All are reserved against a flattened Leiwen (cloud) daiper ground. Below the upper two horizontal bands are pendent 'Cicida Blades'. An accompanying 1973 British Museum letter suggests a...

Priceless Past

This is an extremely rare spear point crafted from pottery and dating at least to the Han period of ancient China (circa 200 BC). It could be older than that but I am having difficulty locating references on these items. Stylistically the piece is likely from one of the minority cultures in Southeast Asian and the only other ones I have seen were attributed to the Dong Son. An interesting attribute of these pottery points is that when suspended from a string they make a very melodic tone when st...

Fine & Rare Chinese Warring States Pottery Bird with Oxford TL Test

This very rare pottery model of a bird, either a duck or a goose, was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is "heavily-potted" and made from quite a high-fired grey pottery. The duck stands with its neck and wings stretched, as if in the act of preparing to fly. Note the detail, especially to the wings, with the tiger heads. The style and decoration suggest this model was based on a bronze example. On the...

Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Early "Blue & White" Vase

This rare and attractively-shaped vase or bottle was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) by one of the kilns at Yuxi county in Yunnan province, one of the first places in the world where blue & white ware was produced. It is "heavily-potted" and decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with floral and leaf designs. It is coated with a clear glaze that falls short of the sturdy foot. Similar wares were first unearthed in 1973 in Lufeng ...
