Scalloped frames with chased leaf and flower border on stippled ground, surmounted by open fruiting grapevine border; cast flower and leaf rim. Elegant Scottish Regency Classicism. Fully marked. Modern sterling silver picture frame. Rectangular window in plain and flat surround. With glass, silk lining, and velvet back and hinged easel support for portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) photo. Marked “Raimond / Sterling”. Raimond Silver Mfg Co. was a Massachusetts maker active in the 1960s and ‘70s. Very good condition with crisp corners. Some velvet wear and discoloration.

Seated in meditation with open and compassionate heart, this bodhisattva is on a spiritual journey, postponing his own salvation in order to remain on earth to help others achieve enlightenment. In contrast to some images of the Japanese Bodhisattva (Bosatsu), often depicted as austere and inward looking, here, Kimura depicts the Bodhisattva as playful, carefree, and decidedly ornate. A beautiful and very old Hagi tea bowl; showing signs of long use and appreciation. The gold repairs add to the overall composition and highlight the important role this piece played in someone’s tea practice.
