Costigan, John Edward American (1888-1972) large watercolor of a brook surrounded by trees some turning red and orange with the season. Watercolor and gouache on textured paper. Signed lower right, “J.E. Costigan N.A.” On the back in the upper left in pencil, “Brook- Autumn/ by John E. Costigan N.A.” and in the upper right, “Orangeburg N.Y.” Size, 20 7/8 by 25 7/8 inches.

Excellent condition in a good frame with linen liner. Have removed it from the frame and inserted separators...

An oil on Masonite painting of a red roofed mill with the mill pond in the foreground and a barn against a hill in the distance. Painted in an unusual palette that includes lavender. I have been unable to find a listing for the artist. In a new frame. 10 by 12 inches, with frame 12.5 by 14.5 inches.

Condition: excellent.

Though it is difficult to date, I suspect it is from the middle of the 20th century and most likely to be American.

Okii Hashimoto, Japanese (1899-1993), woodblock print titled in pencil in the left margin, pencil signed on the lower margin, the artist’s printed signature on right and red seal on the lower left of the print. Probably from the 1960’s. The paper is 23 ½ b7 17 ½ inches (59.5 x 44.5 cm), image 21 ½ by 15 5/8 inches (54.5 x 39.5 cm). The wormy chestnut frame is 30 by 23 inches.

Condition; good with good bleed through to the back, though there is residue of old mounting with masking tape...

A pastel of the river Seine in Paris with the top of a building in the distance over leafy trees and a barge passing through the arch of a bridge by the American born Louis Orr who spent much of his life in Paris. This in a nice example of his work in a new mat and frame. Sight size of pastel 12 by 16 inches (30 by 40 cm) frame size 19 3/8 by 23 3/8 inches (49 by 59 cm).

Condition: Excellent with acid free mat and backing.

Allison, Margaret Prosser American born 1913. Oil on canvas of a steam train in the foreground passing through a town with trees in full summer leaf. The unusual perspective and the color of the buildings are very effective. Ms. Allison taught at the University of Delaware during WW II and I suspect this painting dates from that period. Oil on artist board of waves breaking on a rocky coast titled on the back in pencil, “Surf at Loblolly Cove.” Stanley Woodward, American (1890-1970), was a well-known Rockport Massachusetts artist. Also on the back is written in pencil, “FOR 1949 EXHIB.” The frame has printed on the lower edge words about copyright by Woodward so the silver gilt frame and narrow painted liner are original to the painting. Large folk art hooked cotton rug of a maroon horse outlined in black and with black hooves and tail trotting to the left against a tan ground with maroon corners and blue bands to enclose the horse. Some of the ground hooked in squares of different shades. Dots of brown for nose, eye and in the tail. 22 by 35 inches.

Condition: some wear and small losses around edges, stain at the edge above the horses head and below raised hoof. Three spots of wax in the upper right corner.

A late 19th or early 20th century sterling silver sauce ladle with a round bowl, marked on the back of the handle, “STERLING, J.E. CALDWELL & (the rest of the punch missing) PATENT.” The front of the handle decorated with a long tailed bird (Jay?) in foliage. On the back is more foliage, the marks, and the engraved initial “F.” Approx. 7 inches long. Approx. 60 grams. Condition: Some wear. Decoration still crisp. J.E. Caldwell were a major Philadelphia maker and retailer.
