SOLD Porcelain underglaze blue painted dinner plate decorated in a direct steal from Worcester with the “pine cone” pattern. The form of the plate is slightly different than the Worcester form but design and border are a close copy. Worcester is done with a transfer prints whereas this plate is hand painted and the porcelain is hard paste as opposed to soft paste. A drawing with ink, pencil, watercolor and gouache on laid paper depicting a harbor scene very much in the manner of the French artist Claude Vernet (1714-1789). Perhaps there is a print source for this drawing. The work is signed in the lower right, “Tho. Ryves. 1770.” The most likely artist is either the father Thomas Ryves (1721-1788) or his son Thomas (born 1753) from the distinguished Dorset, England family. The drawing is 10 5/8 x 16 inches (27 x 40.5 cm).

An etching with extensive watercolor depicting two arches of an old bridge with a house built on the pier between the arches, two men in red coats and a dog on the bank below the bridge and lane with trees and houses on the right. Titled along the lower margin to the left, “Part of the Old Bridge east Shrewsbury.” It is unsigned, but part of the old mount that is saved in a folder on the back of the present mount states that it is by Paul Sandby (British 1725-1809). The evidence that it is b...

A creamware plate with a pierced border of alternating piercing patterns and gilt sections. A gilt bird stands in the well of the plate. The decoration is out of character for English style of the period so I would guess that the plate is Continental and from around 1800. It is 7 ½ inches (19 cm) diameter. No marks on the back.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Some scratches and wear to the gilding.

A nicely decorated and shaped platter with 12 sides (the form known in France as a douze pans). This type of platter with a bust and scrolling decoration is typical of Moustiers, though the attribution to the Clerissy factory as stated on the stuck-on label on the back is less certain. The dimensions are 13 5/8 inches (35 cm) long, 10 inches (25 cm) wide and 1 ¼ inches 2.5 cm) tall.

A creamware mug with a black transfer depicting two men walking across a bridge over a stream that pours into a peaceful river with a sailboat and boat with freight steered by a man in the stern. In the distance people on a point of land and in the far distance, beyond bends in the river, the top of an obelisk shows against the horizon. The oval transfer appears as if it was slightly too tall for the mug, being cut off at the bottom. It is otherwise framed with a laurel leaf surround. 3 5/8 inch...

A silver form porcelain teapot with the vented knop on the lid and the pattern number, “N 195” in red enamel on the base. This pattern is known as the “knitting wool” pattern. 5 ¾ (14.6 cm) inches tall, 9 3/8 inches (23.8 cm) across the handle and spout.

Condition: excellent. A tiny rough spot on the lip of the spout might be a tiny glaze chip or it could be a very small firing loss.

I think this form is one of the most pleasing for late 18th century teapots.
