Hemp cloth for child's ceremonial kimono with katazome (stencil-resist-dye) and hand-painting, the technique is called Kata-Yuzen. The weft and warp are hand plied. Superb little agate lotus design brush washer. Hand carved and polished natural color stone, it has russet/orange skin in the areas carved with curling edges and the design is complete with an incised center area and fully worked underside showing stems, pods, leaves and flowers. Very unusual (possibly unique) subject, beautifully carved, excellent faces of both types of creatures, eyes of the frogs are inlaid with light brown horn, wonderful hairwork, great patina. Signed cursively on the bottom - it appears to read ROSEI, but I am not entirely sure. Length 1.59 inches.

Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Soldier Figure

This pottery figure was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is "heavily-potted" and made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a creamy-white pigment. It represents a warrior wearing armoured clothing and a hooded cloak.

It is of a good size with a height of 30 cm (12 inches). There is surface wear and loss of pigment but there is no sign of any restoration or repair.
