Antique Japanese pair of bronze three section lanterns. Tall finials in flame shapes adorn temple style lids and small bronze bells hanging from the edges. Would have originally been used with well light candles, the pair is perfectly matched. The caged midsection has reticulated spiral design walls, which stands on large bell shaped feet. Nice patina due to natural oxidation. Mid to Late Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) Size: 36" H x 14" W

Very fine and rare KANGXI (1662-1722) Blue & White Porcelain Stem Bowl depicting foilage, butterflies, an egret, flowers and lotus with a center medallion. Flared rim with a Lingzhi head design. Double circles mark on base and surrounding the medallion. Excellent condition, no chips, hairlines or restorations. Size: H. 8 cm. x 18.5 cm diameter. Elegant proportions.

A late Ming Wanli blue and white large bottle vase, rounded side with pear shape and glazed base, vase decorated with under glaze blue of galoping horse and flower motif divided with horizontal band, ruyi cloud motif on the neck.
Vase is in good condition with restoration on the upper part, rare to find similar vase in very large size.

A Japanese blue & white porcelain dish, moulded in ‘kraak’ style with the cavetto featuring butterflies and peaches in relief. The rinka, or petaled edge, with flowers. The centre of of the dish has a depiction of a gated pavilion set in a fabulous garden. Arita 1750 ~ 1770. A bowl with a very similar border design and alternate moulded butterflies and peaches is shown in the Catalogue of the Shibata Collection, item 3321.

Cedar wooden ‘post-hide’ or hashira-kakushi that is used as a decoration of one of the posts in a room, or a horizontal post of the tokonoma (niche). The post-hide is the same width as the pillar posts in a Japanese house, hiding it thus almost completely in width.
Cedar wood, the front stained dark brown and decorated in mineral with a dragon. Seal on either end of the plaque. Inscription in black ink on the back...

Chinese Pottery Covered Jar in Globular Form with Incised Rings Design, with some remaing red color and soil encrustration on the surface. The three legs of the jar have bear design, trace of original remains in good condition.

Early 18th C Edo period Japanese byobu painted screen of scholars in retreat. It is composed of 2 panels. The screen has a predominate gold leaf ground on gofun paper. Paint composition is a mineral rimpa paint. The subject matter is a belief of mythology made real. Shu-ton (a scholar's attendant) found a longevity turtle that is believed to be 1000 years old. This turtle is also known to be a messenger to the gods. The expression on the master's face reflects wonderment...

Antique Japanese Buddhist Pilgrim's coat. Buddhist monks associated with the teachings of Kukai (or Kobo Daishi) would embark on a pilgrimage to visit the 88 temples on the island of Shikoku. Upon arriving to each temple, the monk would bathe before giving offerings and reciting prayers as well as receive a stamp distinctive to each temple. Normally a monk would carry around a special stamp book however it is not unusual to stamp the monk's coat as seen here...

Late Meiji to early Taisho (1890s to 1920) lacquered wood netsuke representing a Gigaku theater mask of Baramon - a brahmin of the priestly Indian caste. Rather rare mask, superb quality wonderfully expressive face, lighter wood (probably ichii - Japanese yew wood), excellent use of silvery lacquer. Height 2 1/8 inches.

18th century small Indian bronze votive sculpture of Ganesha seated on elaborate 8-pointed base with the usual attributes in his hands, his vehicle - a rat - crouching in front of him and a naga (cobra) with its body rising along the back of the piece and the hood protectively spread above his head. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, and thus is invoked before any new undertaking...

Description:

A Longquan Li-type censer was in golden-greenish glaze.
Well mold in good profile, the censer was supported by three slender feet.
It was preserved nicely except one portion of glazing imperfection was found on the side.
Foggy and introspective sheen was yielded on the surface due to long time of age.

Date: S. Song/Yuan periods, 12th/13th century.

High class Ohi Chawan made by the 8th generation Ohi Chozaemon (1851-1927) 120 years ago and is done in a style known as 'ameyu' or candy glazing. It comes with its originally signed and sealed wooden box.

The glazing is a wonderful example of ameyu and, in fact, approximates the color of a caramel candied-apple.

The interesting color scheme and glossy sheen make it an attractive backdrop for a frothy bowl of dark green matcha...
