A wonderful Chinese wood elephant head architectural element. All sides are lacquered except for the back and top which are unfinished. Antique Japanese pair of hardwood fusuma door panels with black lacquer frames. The doors are hand-painted with a rooster, a hen, and their chicks with a bamboo grove background, accented with gold flakes. Each door has wire mounts in back to be hung for a wall display.

These early 20th century Chinese carved ceramic turquoise (or robin’s egg) and gold seal boxes are around 1 3/4" high and 2 13/16" wide. One top depicts two women in a room; the other depicts a family in their garden. Peach trees, lucky bats and clouds are carved all over the bottoms. The honorific "Great Qing Dynasty Qian Long made" are stamped on the bottoms. Aside from some loss of gold pigment due to their age, they are in excellent condition.

A fine Unusual tray carved in the form of a banana leaf made from Kuwa wood. The banana leaf is stylistically carved with various folds and the slight tears often seen naturally with banana leaves. In the literati tradition, banana leaves were used by scholar recluses as paper to write calligraphy. This wonderful Edo period antique Japanese tobacco box is made of wood and covered with lacquer which is now seriously aged. In the middle of the lid is small sculptured detail. The box has the original cord and horn tip toggle, and still contains tobacco. Circa 1860's this box is 4.5" x 2.5" x 3" high. It is truly a piece of old ethnographic folk art from Japan's Edo period.

Rather unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) small scholar’s rock in a form of anthracite nugget on dark hardwood stand. Very unusual material for a scholar’s rock - anthracite is type of coal of a hard variety that contains relatively pure carbon. Rich black surface, natural lines in the material, in great condition. Height with stand 1 5/8 inches, stone length 1 7/8 inches, stand length 3 inches.

A lovely porcelain covered box of the Ming Dynasty, Jiajing Period ( 1567 - 1572 ) with a blue and white floral decoration with Lion. Porcelain body, very nice Cobalt blue, covered with an excellent glossy glaze. Diameter : 6,9 cm. H : 5,5 cm. Condition : Perfect original condition. There are 2 firing cracks which can be seen on the last enlargement, but there is no later damage to the piece.

Urn-shaped earthenware vase with decoration of a lady and a boy dancing. Subtle crackle-glaze in shades of peach and pink, with gilt and white moriage (slip) articulations on an olive-green background. Unmarked, but with Japanese handwriting on sticker. Meiji period (1868-1912). There is a drilled hole to the base, for a lamp wire. Height "9½/ 25 cm. Condition: fine. Please note that the white patches near the foot rim on the photos are just reflexions.

19th century Japanese sword set of fuchi (bordering piece between the sword guard and the handle) and kashira (metal pommel at the end of the hilt of a sword) with gold inlaid design of birds in flight over a gnarled flowering cherry tree. Made out of shakudo (alloy of copper and gold) with characteristic black patination resembling lacquer. Excellent quality work, in great condition. Kashira length 1 5/16 inches, fuchi length 1 7/16 inches.

Antique Japanese inro, makie designs of phoenix (ho-o bird) on black lacquer. These large inro are sometimes referred to as sumo wrestler's inro, written "Kahei nuri". The last letter (kao like) is probably "nuri" which means painted or coated with. To roughly quote the Wrangham Index of Inro Artists – according to Soken Kisho, Kahei was a mysterious makie artist that lived in Kyoto during the 18th century.
