China, Famille Rose enameled porcelain jar, with a high shoulder, rounded rim, with white background, and a colorful, detailed landscape motif, from late 19th century period. Size; Height of this wonderful jar is 4 inches, condition consistent with age.

19th century boxwood netsuke of two scholar-hermits wearing simple robes and leaf capes and skirts, totally absorbed by the game of GO. Perfectly captured mood of quiet concentration. Very good assured carving, great faces, wonderful detailing of leaf capes, beautiful mellow patina. Signed SEIZAN in rectangular reserve on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 928 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1.22 inches.

It is an astonishing vase which does not resemble anything known.The shape is very elegant and the decor simple but powerful. But I have absolutely no idea what it is. It is probably buffed sandstone rather than terracotta. The decoration presents a dragon in slight relief pursuing the sacred pearl. The decoration seems to me molded rather than sculpted. A cream glaze covers the whole, stained with brown iron oxide...

Ca. 1800s

This tea pot is inscribed with Chinese characters on one side, and has a bamboo motif incised on the opposite side. The handle and spout are sculpted to represent knotty tree limbs, and the lid is carved with leaves and stems. The maker's seal is impressed on the interior of the lid. It is in good condition and was acquired from my grandmother's antique shop in the mid 1960s.

Bamboo Brush pot of almost cylindrical form, the front deeply carved in low relief, depicting six scholars riding on mules in a mountainous landscape with pine trees. Backside left undecorated. Condition: One large age crack on the backside, some smaller fissures to the base. Dimensions: 21,3 cm high, 14,7 cm diameter. Weight: 710 gram.

19th century Chinese wooden brush rest carved in the form of a crouching dragon. Dense hardwood (must be wood species related to huanghuali), wonderful warm patina, old nicks, ink and water stains adding character to the piece. Clever functional design, very good object for scholar’s desk. Length 4 7/8 inches, height 1 5/16 inches.

19th century Asakusa school stag antler netsuke of a seated tanuki (badger) with its enormous belly, an inscribed sake bottle in one paw, an accounting book in the other. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: it drums with his paws on its large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness. Judging by the book in its paw, this time tanuki acts as a sake vendor...

A Chinese Yixing stoneware incense burner in the form of Budai, laughing as usual, grasping a small pile of cash. The stoneware has been attractively enameled with flowers and a Shou medallion decorates his back. The base has an impressed maker’s mark. 19th century.

The incense burner is in two parts, Budai sits on a large cushion, this base features a pierced disc for the insertion of joss sticks.

Approximately 15.5 cm high. From the exterior the burner is in perfect condition...

Japanese Satsuma Earthenware square shape small Censer, Incense Pot, Meiji, 1900, 2 1/8" high, 2" square-top rim, supported by four(4) small bracket feet, the Gold and enamel painting are very small finely done. Each Panel is decorated with flying Dragon, Phoenix Bird and other flying Mythetical animals in round circling cartouche in the middle with accented by detailed design. The condition is good except some raised fine detailed gold paintings are worn.

A really old Japanese lacquer wooden mizusashi for the tea ceremony, made of cherry wood with its original lacquered lid. It dates from the later Edo Period. Such wooden mizusashis are really rare. It is elegantly proportioned and has a black lacquered interior.

Mizusashi is a fresh water jar with a lid used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony to fill the boiling kettle and rinse the tea bowls...

Unusual 19th century Chinese marble brush rest suggesting a dramatic mountain with multiple arches and caves. The piece gives a good feeling of weathered mountain surfaces and quiet energy of the stone. Beautifully carved marble pierced to resemble traditional Taihu limestone, richly textured surface. Natural fissure lines in the stone, no losses or repairs. Excellent functional object for scholar’s table, can be viewed as a scholar’s rock as well. Length 5 1/2 inches.

19th century Japanese Asakusa school staghorn kiseruzutsu - tobacco pipe case - carved with a mountainous landscape and figures of Kanzan reading an open scroll and Jittoku leaning on his broom. According to a legend, Kanzan and Jittoku lived in a kitchen of a Chinese Zen Buddhist monastery and talked nonsensical language, which some took as a sign of them being enlightened. Very clever carving incorporating outer texture of the antler and porous nature of its center as elements of design...

Antique Chinese ruyi scepter carved of boxwood in a naturalistic representation of a lingzhi mushroom. Long and elegantly curved with smaller lingzhi sprouting from it's stem. Beautifully carved with great attention to detail and form. Ruyi scepters were used in Chinese Buddhist ceremonies and as symbols of good fortune, luxury and power.

Large Chinese Qing dynasty blue and white porcelain basin with a central interior roundel decorated in the Canton style with a figure in a traditional pavilion in a landscape scene surrounded by water boats and a bridge. Hanging jewels extend around the circumference of the well and a border is along the rim. Three bamboo sprays are on the exterior. The unglazed base is flat. 19th century. 13 1/4" diameter x 4 1/2" high...

19th century netsuke of cut vegetables, tofu and rice cakes inside a wooden pan with handle. Superb elegant design in Japanese taste with perfectly captured mood of happy anticipation of a good meal, excellent carving, beautiful patina. Signed MITSUHIRO on the bottom of the pan.
