A very well rendered watercolor painting on paper, of a Union officer. There is a large amount of background detailing, showing camp tents by a river, with the American flag flying. Superb condition. 8 1/4" by 6 1/4"
Watercolor on heavy paper, 5 1/4" by 10", 10 1/4" by 14 1/2" in early 20th century dark laminated wood frame, signed at lower right in pencil "Della Vernon". DELLA VERNON (1876-1962) was an early California painter, the works of whom are considered scarce, according to the biography in the definitive Hughes Dictionary of California Artists. She was born in Iowa but was known to be in San Diego by 1901, and by 1909 she was in Oakland...
Watercolor painting of famous Union Square in downtown San Francisco, the St. Francis Hotel at right, so the view looking southwest. The work measures 14 1/2" by 21 1/2" (21" by 28" as framed). It is signed at lower right by well listed artist SUN YING (1919-2016). The artist was born in China. His scroll paintings and other works in the traditional style seem to bring large amounts of money at auction in China...
Watercolor painting of flowers in a vase on a tabletop, 16" by 18 1/2" (20" by 22" framed), signed at lower left corner by noted artist GUY DE BOUTHILLIER. The artist, born in France in 1893 to a French political minister, is said to have studied with Monet, Picasso, and John Singer Sargent (see printed label on reverse, with short biography, from the old Beverly Hills-based Martin Lowitz Gallery)...
A watercolor painting of pine or cypress trees on the coast, perhaps a place like Carmel or Santa Barbara, measuring 14 3/4" by 18 3/4" (20" by 23 1/2" framed). The work is unsigned, (I have opened it up to peek inside, no writing anywhere) and judging from the framing it could date to the 1970's or 1960's. The artist used quality Arches paper (see blind stamp of same). The painting is clean and problem-free; over the years it has slipped inside its mat so will have to be probably re-affixed.
Attributed to J F Herring 1795-1865” Equine Study Watercolor 9x12
Circa 1840's watercolor on paper (not likely later than 1860), apparently unsigned, 16 1/4" by 10 1/2" (25" by 20 1/2" as framed), showing a classic European tower above an arched stone bridge in a city, several figures in period clothing going about their daily lives. This is in amazingly fresh condition, with vibrant fresh color and a minimum of foxing...
A detailed watercolor over ink and slight highlighting with gum Arabic of a man with a donkey loaded with two conical panniers of fresh vegetables approaching a man working at a board over a large cask of water with a stand of fresh vegetables behind him. The man with the donkey is probably from the country and trying to sell his produce to the stall owner. The page is roughly 12 7/8 x 16 5/8 inches (33 x 42 cm). The opening for the image is 11 ¼ x 14 ¼ inches (28.5 x 36 cm)...
This is a fine 1919 work featuring roses and their stems and leaves, signed at right center by artist A. E. DALE and dated there 1919. I do not see a listing for this obviously talented artist. The painting, 17" by 13" inside the mat and 23" by 20" framed, is in amazingly fresh condition considering it was painted nearly 100 years ago. The paper is not yellowed and there is no foxing. The frame is contemporary and in excellent condition...
Original artwork for cream of wheat or either white rose tea, by N.Lockwood, American Artist circa 1940, gouache Watercolor measuring 14 x 17“ original frame 18 x 22“
Early watercolor on paper of flowers, I think petunias, in a ceramic vessel, 11" by 14", 17 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right indecipherably, and possibly dated 1901. I believe the artist is likely listed, considering the quality of the drawing. The paper was laid long ago on a board, as shown. Condition of the image area is excellent, with colors true and not faded.
A group of three small watercolors of scenes in rural Hambleden, England, by late 20th century English artist (Mrs.) P. Begley. The three each measure 5 1/2" by 8" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" identically framed). Each is signed with conjoined initials PB in lower left corner and the artist wrote her address and titles on reverse backing. The works probably date to circa 1980. Pleasing scenes of the classic, peaceful countryside of England...
Large (21 1/4" by 30 1/4" plus 3 1/2" mat and gold frame) highly detailed drawing of a royal Indian elephant festooned with festive "hat", bells and rug, seen in profile, and surrounded by a decorative floral border. This is classic Indian art executed in a traditional style, though I believe it is of fairly contemporary age. The silk is backed by rather cushy, soft material. Frame is in good condition with minor wear...

A watercolor painting featuring a street scene in exotic Cusco, Peru, the imagery of a steep walkway in the high altitude mountain city, a lone figure in classic, native Andean dress descending the steps, an extensive view of tiled rooftops, whitewashed buildings and churches completing the middle distance, as serrated mountain ranges fill the horizon. The 10 7/8" by 7 1/2" painting (15 1/4" by 12 1/4" framed) is signed at lower left "ORE" and dated there 1980. Condition is excellent...

Watercolor and ink drawing of the iconic world-class sight, the Parthenon atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The work is signed in red in Greek at lower right and there is an inscription in Greek handwriting on the reverse. Measurements inside the deep blue mat are 10 1/2" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 13" in simple undistinguished strip frame). A small watercolor and ink drawing of the famous old Brulatour courtyard, 520 Royal Street in the New Orleans Vieux Carre (French Quarter), signed at lower right and dated there '51 (and titled/signed/dated again on the reverse backing) by New Orleans artist E. ALVA EDWARDS. Internet research suggests but cannot confirm that this be a work by one EDWIN ALVA EDWARDS JR. (1914-1988) of the Baton Rouge area. The clean piece measures 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" as framed. There does not appear to be an arti...
Watercolor on paper, 4" by 10 3/4" (8 1/4" by 15" as framed), signed at lower left with what appears as "Stribens" or "Stirbens"......I do not see a listing for such a name. I could be misreading it. In any event this is a decorative old vintage watercolor landscape by a talented artist, still in its original frame. There's no glass currently, but the work has survived the passage of time in excellent fresh condition, with only a tiny handful of foxing spots. On the reverse of the frame is a...
Watercolor on paper, 15" by 11" inside the mat (21" by 17" as framed), signed at lower right by listed American artist GUSTAVE A. BRAND (1863-1944). This is a nicely crafted work of an overly ardent suitor chasing his classically dressed prey in an overgrown garden setting. The artist is not well known but he is listed and was apparently known in Chicago and the Midwest as a muralist. The condition of the work is excellent and this could be placed directly on the wall, though I' am not sure t...
Executed on heavy watercolor paper, this is a beautiful work by a trained hand, 18" by 26 1/2", unframed, and unsigned. At lower left is written "Valley Ten P/1912", and to the right of and below that "After a fire". On the reverse in pencil is "Valley of Ten Peaks" and "MORAINE LAKE". The painting has foxing in the sky and the reverse is also foxed, but the colors are not faded. There are tack holes in each of the lower corners, and two sharp but short creases, each near the edges, as show...
A very finely crafted watercolor painting of an 18th century dandy in an elegant aristocratic interior, " by " (" by " framed), dedicated "Yours Sincerely" at lower right, and signed rather illegibly below that. The work's quality means the artist must be listed but try as I might, I cannot decipher the name. More than likely the work is circa 1890. Condition is excellent. I opened the old backing in hopes of finding more information or writing but there was none to be found. The short nail...

A poetic and dreamy watercolor titled on reverse "The Tail of St. John's Lake", (and original 32 Pound Sterling price) signed at lower right with what appears as "H Vaux" or similar. The mid 20th century watercolor is by a masterful hand. Painted in muted colors, it measures 7 1/4" by 12 1/2" inside the present mat, and 14 1/2" by 19 1/2" in modern simple framing. Could be shipped without the non-glare glass and frame. Further research could result in positive identification of the artist. ...

A contemporary watercolor painting, the subject an arid landscape with adobes and a flat-topped butte in the distance, signed at lower left by artist "Kimura" who dated the work '97. The piece measures 9" by 6" (15 1/2" by 12 1/2"). The barbed wire foreground fence adds to the Southwest ambience. Condition is excellent, frame has slight wear.
Found in New Hampshire, this is an antique unsigned watercolor of a rocky coastline, sailing boats on the horizon. Measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", the work on paper is glued down to an 1893 Salem, Massachusetts legal directory, the edges of which are crumbling. Those edges should probably be trimmed, and the watercolor then framed to preserve it for another century. Though simple and monochromatic, this is a work well worth preserving. One corner is brittle.
A miniature or small gouache hillside landscape painting (3" by 4 1/4"), 7 3/4" by 9 3/4" in silvery stand-up frame, signed at lower left "R. Becker". The artist is Russ or Russell Becker, according to a Christmas 1995 hand-written holiday note on the inside of the blue card to which this is affixed. I do not see an obvious artist by this name, but he was clearly talented. The scene appears western, given the reddish rocky outcrop. Condition is excellent.
Late 1900s
This painting of mountains and dwellings is well-painted using traditional techniques that take the viewer from the house in the lower right foreground up through pine trees, rivers and a waterfall to the distant, hazy ink-washed mountains of the upper background. It is mounted on paper with a silk brocade surround and lacquered wooden rollers. The artist's signature is accompanied by a red seal and two spurious imperial collector's seals also in red. The condition is very good....

Watercolor on heavy paper, 19" by 15 1/4" (28" by 24" as framed), the subject a California quail perched on a bleached snag in a vaguely defined, arid looking mountain landscape. The work is signed at lower right "MUGGS VAN SANT", and is not dated. The artist is MUGGS VAN SANT (1898-1964); apparently he was an athlete in track and football at UC Berkeley, circa 1930, and there is a reference to him, important California watercolor artist Millard Sheets and others relaxing and painting at a Kon...
A circa 1950's watercolor on heavy paper featuring a brick 19th century home on an orderly property including white split rail fencing, and a barn at right. Perhaps this is a gentleman's farm property in the eastern states, anywhere from Virginia through Ohio and up to New England. The artist, WILLIAM NETHERY, signed the watercolor at lower left and wrote "Passing Storm" on the mat at lower left, while also signing the mat again at lower right. I have not been able to discover any information...

Gouache delicately painted and encoded with symbols of Hindu spiritual meaning. Crescent moon is on her forehead with halo around her head. She is holding a trident and has three eyes in her forehead representing waking, dreaming and sleeping states of mind. Atmospheric and masterfully moody painting. Similar in painting style to Nanda...
An extensive classical Italian Mediterranean landscape on paper, signed at lower right by artist CARL NACKE (1876-after 1931). Nacke was an artist best known for his work on fine porcelains at German porcelain factories; these porcelains appear at auction in Europe.

The work, 13" by 8" inside the mat, is not signed on the front; on the reverse side of the aged board is a lot of writing in pencil in Russian, which I am unable to read, save for the artist's name. Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. New Mexico's artistically inspiring landscape stimulated Pettus' aesthetic sense as it has for countless others. Even though he became a professional engineer, mo...
