This is a dramatic rendering of the Chinese character for stone 石 by the Japanese artist Haku Maki. It's a large print, a Big Green, in the words of Daniel Ttretiak, who called Maki's large red depictions of characters (kanji) Big Reds. Please contact ldtnbj@gmail.com

This is a rather early landscape etching in brown ink, signed at lower right in pencil by the renowned southwestern artist MICHAEL B. COLEMAN (1946-). The work is numbered 20/20 at lower left margin. Judging from the auction record, which shows that oils have exceeded $50,000, the number of etchings by Coleman's hand is apparently rather limited. This is a wall-ready unusually fresh and clean lithograph, hand colored, titled "Millard Fillmore/Whig Candidate for Vice President", by New York competitors to Nathaniel Currier, J. Baillie and Company. The coloring is green in the curtains and just a hint of blush on the cheeks. Size is 13" by 9" inside the double mat. This is a lithograph, apparently signed in the plate only, by the noted American artist RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987). Soyer, one of several brothers who became significant figures in American art during the WPA and mid century period, became known for his sensitive studies of human figures in urban settings and interiors. Paintings sell at major auctions, and prints, some hand signed and some not, are regularly encountered. This one is in clean condition and is ready for the wall.

Haku Maki did these huge prints from 1970 to 1973. This is Poem Reconciliation done in 1970. It is a big image; it boldly flows across the paper. It is clean not busy, dramatic and elegant. It is from an edition of 50. I have only ever seen this one number of the edition. It has a dazzling yellow sun and sharp red tear that balance the kanji in the center. It is signed and chopped and re-signed in black ink next to the chop. Everything clicks. It is 35in x 35in.

Haku Maki's Poem Z depicts a Heart by any other name. Maki began to use this theme early in his artistic life. The character was often vertical but this is the only time it was at an angle from the center and seemingly lacking in one stroke, Hence it is an unusual design and intellectually challenging. This is a brilliant example of Haku Maki's Big Red prints, his frequent use of a large red character on a black background.

I first saw this print in a small pamphlet from White Lotus Gallery in Oregon, acquired the print in ways that Du Yuesheng would be proud of and it has rested here for over two years It is a small print but it packs a punch. It shows a prancing dancing woman. What do you think? The kanji in the center of the print is set off by a tear at the left and a sun at the right. It measures 5.75” x 8.5”.

Maki’s earliest works were done in the late 1950s and remained rather unknown until the late 1960s. He first started producing prints using red ink in 1965 and this is probably the first example. It is also what I call a Big Red. It is very abstract and it fills up the whole sheet. Maki wanted his prints to have balance.
