Two large peony blossoms are lacquered in gold and orange on the front, with smaller leafed branches on the reverse. Paulownia wood is very light, fine-grained, and warp-resistant, and is often used in Japan for chests and boxes...

A 1920's Wakasa lacquer clam trinket box. Both sides match and the two pieces fit together perfectly. Dating from the 1920's, it measures 4.75" across, 2.25" high, 3.75" front to back. Wakasa craftsman developed the process of layering lacquer coats of different colors during the Edo period.

Tsuto made of rice straw which is used for containing ceramic plates. It has a small wooden tag "12 plates". In old age, there was no plastic cushioning material so that rice straw was used much for it and for other crafts. Four(4) Japanese Wooden Straw Mat or Tatami Mat Weaving Weights, Ca. 1930, 6 1/4" long, 1 1/2" diameter for various wood were used, and tied with Straw Rope, one(1) replaced with modern white Nylon rope, used for weaving for many years. The condition is worn and warm rounded patina on wood.

A large color splashed charger by one of Kyotos more original artists Tsuboi Asuka enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vessel has a narrow foot with steadily rising sides creating a light airy feel; sheet white clay covered in green glass interspersed with runs of opaque shadow. Perfect for a service of summer fruits, or as a shallow basin for an arrangement of summer flowers. It is just less than 16 inches (40 cm) diameter and in excellent condition...

Japanese print of a woman holding a calligraphy paint brush, by Shiko Munakata (1903-1975). A zen Buddhist, he worked in oil painting, then woodblock printing, calligraphy and ceramics. Embroidered in vivid pink on olive cotton, this purse from Swat valley is 50-60 years old and in excellent condition. A nice and interesting polished Nephrite amulet in the shape of a Cicada, Ming style.

The pendant carved in a rarely seen brown-black stone. This fine nephrite pendant comes from an old German Collection of handpicked Chinese jade carvings of insects from different periods, from the Neolithic to 20th. century. The cicada was carved in a Ming Dynasty Style, but possible from Qing Dynasty, we're not certain.

The 20th century Japanese scroll painting by the artist, Miyadai Tamae (1945-?). Miyadai Tamae is a Japanese painter who specializes in flower-and-bird paintings characterized by his effective use of ink. His paintings are popular for their subdued and tasteful colors. Ink and color on Silk, hanging scroll. This painting represents a cricket happily living in the nature. Signed “Tamae”, with one signature seal of the artist. Only one scroll head survived, otherwise excellent condition.
