A pair of mythical animals (mother and child) of a creamy jade color. It has small areas of natural brown, light orange and grey coloration and inclusions. The jade is beautifully carved and feels lovely to the touch. The curled tail of the smaller animal forms a round hole which enables a thin rope to be put through it. Absolutely endearing. Rare Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Glazed Stoneware Censer

This stoneware censer was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). It is quite "heavily-potted" with both inner and outer surfaces coated in a crackled transparent olive-green glaze reminiscent of yue ware, apart from the sturdy foot that remains unglazed. To the inside centre there is kiln grit embedded within the glaze...

The Bixie was well carved with protruding eyes, ruyi-shaped nose, curved ears and single-horned head.
By vividly depicted ribs on its abdomen and the flouring hairs of the tails, the fairy beast was rest on the flat bottom in plain form-an important characteristic for early jade carvings.

Apparently caused by firing effects, the surface of the glaze was transformed to a mysterious image that was charming and different.
It was not sure if it was intentionally finished by an ingenious potter or just an accidental surprise.

The Kiseruzutsu (pipe case) is delicately engrave with a goose and grass, bone ring to the top. The clasp to the leather pouch shows a tiger and dragon in brass. When seen together, they represent the concept of duality in the cosmos. There is a repair (sewn together) on the left side of leather pouch. This dates from the first years of the Meiji period (1868-1912).
