Exceedingly well fired Shigaraki mizusashi resembling two ash covered stacked stones. This ash and charcoal covered mizusashi is an enigma. The signature is illegible but the piece is obviously a work of one of the most talented Shigaraki potters of the post-war period. Born in 1944, Yamamoto Izuru has made an indelible mark in the world of male ceramists, specializing in the revered Bizen pottery tradition. His unique ceramic style seamlessly blends the time-honored techniques of Bizen ware, passed down by his father, the esteemed Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, with sculpting methods acquired during his sojourn in France.

The name “Tobe-ware” first appeared in historical documents in the mid-18th century, though the tradition itself dates back well over 1,000 years.
