This classic Mingei hanaire is by Mashiko potter Hyuga Munetoshi, a one time student of the Hamada kiln (?). Glazed in an exceedingly rich tessha/kaki iron glaze the pot has wax resisted decoration of flowers on either side of the pot. Created for both function and decoration , this pot is a great example of modern Mingei influenced Mashiko pottery. Kaneshige Toyo is no doubt one of the most important Japanese potters in 20 century and the first Bizen artist to be awarded with Living National Treasure title in 1956.
He is considered as the founder of modern Bizen pottery and at the same time he is known for successfully recreating the sheen of Momoyama Bizen pottery.

I have long wanted to offer a significant piece by this artist, and here is a spectacular Nezumi Shino pair of vases by Wakao Toshisada enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Red tinged white waves boil over the Nezumi-gray arc of the base, a white waxing moon floating above. Decidedly modern, Japanese, and minimalist; the textures, colors, and form of this fascinating tea bowl all suggest inspiration from natural objects. The grey, smooth, polished interior of the tea bowl contrasts nicely with the textured ferrous dark ochre ash glaze on the exterior. Somewhere between an ido and wan-nari shape, it rests surprisingly well in the hand and allows the user to contemplate the mysteries of nature through their tactile and visual senses.

Round serving platter in the "Toucans" pattern from Hermes, produced for Hermes by Moustiers France in their famous faience ware.

This redware pottery is heavier than the Limoges porcelain in which this pattern is usually found. The Moustiers ware is less common as fewer pieces were made due their being handmade with a raised design, except the plates which are flat.

The platter is 12 inches (30.5cm) in diameter, and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Marked.
