Haku Maki did a wide range of works: prints of many sizes, book plates, greeting cards, and postcards. Here are four postcards that he did in 1999. They are lithographs, each signed and with a Maki seal. They also appeared as prints at the same time. Haku Maki or his family produced them in the last year or so of his life.

The Marble Sculpture measures 18" tall x 9" at the base. This appears to be a Sculpture by Constantin Brancusi.(1876-1957). This Sculpture was purchased from an Estate in Highland Park in Dallas, Texas. It was used as a decoration for a private pool at that particular Estate. This Abstract Sculpture is not signed. More information will be added later.

Frame 5 shows Sanae’s careful translation and explanation of this print – and her intuition as to what Maki-san may have meant when he created this image 41 years ago. The photo on the left is a close-up of the Whistler butterfly signature with scorpion tail. The circular image is part of a parasol design. The photo on the right shows a close-up of Whistler's right hand holding a brush. Notice the reddish knuckles which indicates his health. Refer to Whistler portrait.

Please notice how well the image overlays match the original portrait. There are over 20+ matches which identify this portrait as Rockefeller. The size of this Painting is 10 5/8" x 10 3/4". Attributed to James Reid Lambdin.(1807-1889). This painting is in untouched condition and notice the original pine frame and mount. Our research has found that this painting is identical to the portrait of George Peabody (1795-1869) Painted in 1857 by James Reid Lambdin...

Some time ago one Connie Elrod offered me a set of the Maki zodiac in a format never seen before or since. These are not pulled from cement blocks. Rather they seem to be printed lithographs. One James Imai, a friend of Maki who lives in California, commissioned Maki to do a special zodiac set for the Lunar Year. Imai seems to have sent a card every year to friends. Imai sent them to his friend James Elrod seemingly one every year for 12 years...

The bottom margin states this is 39/777 but did Maki really do that many and if so where are they? This is a late-in-life Maki print. Where did this idea come from? A sunflower! I know van Gogh did quite a few famous paintings depicting many sunflowers, all realistic paintings. The Japanese printmaker Tadashi Nakayama did many different takes on Sunflowers. Portrait of Mother and Child" (1867) Oil on board, 14" X 16" framed Jonathan Pratt was a Midlands artist working in Birmingham. He was an extremely diverse artist painting genre, figure and portraits, as well as street scenes, rural and coastal views in Britain, France and Algiers. He studied in Birmingham and exhibited a total of 279 works there between 1864-1915, the latter being posthumously exhibited...

In 1970 quite suddenly Haku Maki started producing truly large prints. They were dramatic and somewhat unexpected, all at least 24in x 24in and extended in size to 35in x 35in. His huge print of a woman is 36in x 72in. All of these were created in 1970. Then no Big ones until Big Mu done in 1973. Then no more huge ones. What happened to Maki? What happened to the supply of paper? This Poem 70-10 is pretty large--17.5in W x 24.5in H--but it was succeeded by others even larger.

Ernest Garthwaite was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1940. He studied at Loras College in Iowa, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1961, and at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, receiving his Master of Arts in 1962...

I call this set of images The Zodiac but Maki formally called them Animal Song + the animal name in kanji. The prints here are Animal Song. Red Lantern Gallery in Kyoto distributed them in 1968. In 1968 Haku Maki was commissioned by Red Lantern Gallery to produce the 12 animals of the Zodiac in a series entitled Animal Song. My Research Note 3 described the set briefly. This is an enhanced version. Maki did only 50 copies of each print; that was a normal run for him in that period...
