In the mid-1960s, Haku Maki was firmly launching his career as an important Japanese print maker. He did a series of prints of which a long and key series was the Alphabet A – Z. In turn, the Alphabet was the first series of what came to be many series of prints, all of which Maki called the Poem series. Prints in the Poem series continued to be produced until 1972. Birds fly past, a calendar for March hangs on the wall, and her dog is beside her. Pencil-signed, titled, and numbered 10/30 in the lower margin. This is an unusually bright, saturated-color example of the MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985) lithograph "Romeo and Juliet", printed by Mourlot. This is a well known image by Chagall, created in 1964 for the ceiling of the Opera Garnier in Paris. Charles Sorlier in association with the famous lithography house Mourlot adapted this image from Chagall's sketches for the project and printed this. Measurements are 24 3/4" by 38 3/4".
