A plaster of Paris sculpture of St. John the Baptist as a child, sleeping. The boy dressed in camel skin is leaning on a rock, cross in hand and a lamb at his feet. France, mid-19th century, with nice patina and traces of a light blue colouring. Plaster of Paris was a gypsum or chalk mixture used for architectural and art purposes from the beginning of the 19th century and small sculptures, especially with religious themes, were widely exported. African (possibly, west African) wood carving of a face with decorative motifs, two eye holes, extreme dimensions 23 1/2" by 4" by 3", hand painted and carved out of one block of wood. It has some age. An interesting work for a long narrow space that needs some decoration.
