This bag looks like it's made of bakelite, but it doesn't test as such. I went and learned a lot about early plastics from Andrea DeNoto's book, " Art Plastic," and the best I can come up with is Thermoset Phenolic Resin. That said, whatever the material, this is an extraordinary bag in extraordinary condition.
Except for some light surface wear on the back side of the clutch, the bag seems perfect...

Antique, 19th century, Indo-Persian, Northern Indian, Islamic or Sikh shield Dhal of circular convex form with upturned rim, made of hand-hammered solid brass elaborately hand-chiseled with figures of various animals and humans among the profusely chiseled foliate patterns.
The front is set with a crescent moon and four domed bosses, affixed on the reverse by four ring bolts for straps (to hold the shield).

This bowenite carving of a vase with three mythical animals, Qi Lin, is 5 1/8” high (with fitted hard wood base it is 6” high), 4 ¾” on the widest part and around 2” thick. There is a stamped date on the wood base of Sept. 2004. The carving depicts three Qi Lin playing with ribbons and a ball. It is in excellent condition.
