This well carved turquoise snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall, 1 ½ inches wide and a little more than 1 inch thick. One side depicts a standing smiling Buddha (Hotai in Japanese), the other side is plain. The snuff bottle was made in the 1970¡¯s. It has its original cap carved from the same turquoise as the body. It is in excellent condition.

Two dramatic Bunraku Puppet Kashira (heads) from the Awaji puppet carving tradition. The male is Kumagai Naozane, a character from the Heikei Monogatari present at the Battle of Ichinotani made by Ryuun. The female figure is Yaegakehime from the play Honcho Nijushi ko. Each cake is molded with designs of scholars on the fronts and raised calligraphy on the reverse. The designs on the front are all gilded in two shades of gold, and the reverse has gilt seals and some script gilded as well. Each piece is unused and is in good condition.

A pair of Japanese wooden carvings of the Nio, or wrathful guardians to the Buddha. While Buddhism beliefs are typically pacifist, the Nio justified physical force in order to defend against evil and are usually found on either side of a temple door. This large carved rose quartz snuff bottle is 3 ¼ inches tall, 2 ¼ inches wide and 2 inches in depth. One side depicts a crane standing on one leg and a Ling Zhi (a tree mushroom that symbolizes longevity) in its mouth; the other side depicts a deer facing a pine tree. The snuff bottle is late 1970¡¯s product. It has some natural flaws and some small chips on the top of the rim.

The massive stone carving of a stump of a tree is a 1970’s, 1980's product. It depicts two large beetles sitting on the top of a rotted stump; their eggs are nearby. Some fungus and mushrooms are growing from the top and sides of the stump. Several leaves lay on the side as well. The carving is superbly realistic. It is 6 ½” high, 7 ½” wide from the widest part and 8” thick. It is in excellent condition.

A captivating piece described on the box as “aka e sakana bun” which can be loosely translated as, Depiction of Fish with Red Overglaze. Okuda (1920-1999) was a student of both Hamada Shoji and Kawaii Kanjiro and his kiln was visited by a number of well-known artists including the likes of Bernard Leach. A distinctive style following the mingei or, “folk craft,” movement of the mid-20th century, this piece is a delight for the eyes and functional in the hand.
