A large shiwan (shekwan) sculpture of an Aesthetic riding a pomegranate red foo lion. The glaze is thick and glass-like with a natural crackle that only comes from age. The clay’s color and some ash residue (a good thing) indicate that this piece was fired in a dragon kiln about 5 - 15 miles upstream from Foshan. This is a wonderfully hand-carved netsuke depicting Bakemono "Unreal Thing or Goblin" with a Rokuro-Kubi (whirling Neck), in other words a Goblin creature with an expanding neck like the spring of 'Jack-in-the-box", that, according to legend, twists its head around and leers in the faces of sleepers. These two wine stems are a collaboration between two companies: Cambridge Glass made the amethyst art deco flared wine bowl, while Farber Bros. made the cut-out chrome basket, the shapely stem and the broad bell foot. They are marked Farber Bros. on the bottom of each stem. These charming glasses stand 5 3/4" tall and are in excellent condition. This pair of vases was recovered from an estate in the Castroville/Watsonville area of California, over 20 years ago. This area is known as the Artichoke Capital of the world. When I recovered these vases they had been lamps and have since had the bottom drills hole restored. These vases are old but probably not Meiji era. Rare blond tortoiseshell case, circa 1930, is considered the most desirable of all tortoiseshell. This handmade case was originally made to hold cigarettes but is a perfect size for business cards. Chinese posrcelain tea bowls with saucers and lids. The cups and lids are beautifully painted with phoenixes and dragons flying through clouds. The saucer is painted with pink, blue and yelow clouds. The cups are signed Chein Lung on the base, date from republic period. They measure 4.5" wide 3.5" tall with saucer and lid.

A small Chinese porcelain vase delicately painted in fencai / famille rose enamels with a scene depicting two ladies on a river bank washing silk. The base carries an iron red four character Qianlong (1736 - 1795) reign mark but this vase was made later, in the early 20th Century, during the Republic period. The cube joining the various cups shows measurements on one side and is stamped with the hallmark for Benedict Manufacturing Company (1894-1953) on the other.
