Very rare woman’s skirt (pukhang) from the Kachin/Jingpo ethnic group, Northeast Burma. This style is very uncommon compared to the red wool types most commonly seen on the “ethnographic textile” market. This is a single panel with supplementary weft trim on the ends made of dog hair. Aside from tiny amounts of commercially dyed thread used on the borders as highlights this piece is made of all hand spun treads and natural dyes. It is quite a durable weave with denim like feel....

Wonderful old “farmer’s lunchbox” from Northern Thailand, used for carrying sticky rice to the fields for hard day’s work. This is probably about 50 years old possibly more, with a classic double wall construction. The contracted rim at the mouth is quite unusual and it is the only time I have seen this. In excellent condition it is made from split bamboo with the original natural fiber cord. H: 20cm/8in and W: 20cm/8in.

Pair of unique and eclectic Shan lacquer images, from Thai/Burmese border. These are used for grinding down to make medicine or magic potions. The larger one is molded of compressed powder (the head has been broken off and glued back on) and unused circa 50 years old, the smaller one is hand carved from what looks to be a root and is circa 100 years old. The Shan, as all Asian cultures have a strong tradition of herbal medicine, the fact these have been carved into images adds an elem...
