An albumen photograph circa 1880 of a man feeding a group of dogs gathered at his feet. In the lower left printed in the negative, Abdullah Freres. 515” and in the lower right, “Les Chiens des rues.” The image is 7 7/8 inches (20 cm) by 10 1/8 inches (25.7 cm). It is presently corner mounted in a large mat 17 inches (43 cm) by 14 inches (35.5 cm). The tones are rich and the contrast good.

A hand painted blue and white tile of a wolf, at least that is what it looks like though the head is a little odd, in profile running to the left. The animal is surrounded by a circle of a wavy line with dots in the wave troughs. Flowers fill the corners. It is 5 1/8 inches (13 cm) square about ½ inch (1.2 cm) tall. The red clay sides are beveled so that the back is slightly smaller than the front. This style of decoration was used in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century.

An albumen photograph of a gargoyle located high on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Unknown photographer. Written in the negative in the lower right, “1003, Paris Notre Dame.” The gargoyle emerges from the waist up with a human torso, a dragons ridge on the back of the elongated neck, pointed ears, deep sunk eyes and a slit for a nostril in a rounded snout. 10 ½ x 8 inches (27 x 20 cm) mounted with transparent corners in a 16 x 20 inch (40.5 x 51 cm) mat. A molded porcelain figure of a man in 18th century dress turned slightly to his right to warm his hands over a flaming brazier, emblematic of winter. The figure is marked on the base with the underglaze blue “F.” for Furstenberg. It also has the impressed marks A.a.M for a later production of the model which has the impressed number 85. 7 3/8 inches (19 cm) tall.

Condition: excellent except for the amputation of the fingertips of the right hand.

The Boydell Gallery of paintings from Shakespeare must have been an amazing site in fashionable London in the early 19th century. The publisher, John Boydell, commissioned some of the leading artists of the day to paint scenes from Shakespeare and to display the paintings at the publishers Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall. A group of three engravings probably by Johannas and Raphael Sadeler of Christian anchorites or hermits. The prints are after Maartin De Vos. These images were widely circulated in the early 17th century and printed and re-engraved by engravers other than the Sadelers. Interestingly of the three in this group two have no title, though they are trimmed right to the image and perhaps the title was removed. Three metal martini glasses stamped on the bottom "MADE IN/HSIANG YUN CO./HANKOW." Hankow (Hankou) is part of the present day city of Wuhan. In the early 20th century the city contained five foreign concessions.

Three plates with a blind molded basket weave border and swirled ribs the way Coalport molded plates in the early part of the 19th century. The hand painted flowers in a central bouquet and four single flowers on the lip are very much in the early Coalport style. The plates are 9 ¼ inches (23.5 cm) in diameter.

An Oude Loosdrecht plate with a modest bouquet of hand painted flowers in the center of the well, sprigs of flowers here and there, a molded lip with the molding picked out in blue and a gilt edge. An Oude Loosdrecht porcelain soup plate with an off-center bouquet in the bowl, scattered flowers and a molded lip picked out in blue. The gilt rim is slightly shaped. Marked on the bottom in underglaze blue with the initials M.O.L. and incised with numbers, letters and a star. 9 ½ inches (24 cm) diameter.

A porcelain plate decorated with floral sprigs and bouquets with a shaped rim decorated with gilt dentil edge marked on the underside with a “B” in underglaze blue. 9 inch (23 cm) diameter. This short lived porcelain factory, roughly 1776-1781, had the Duc d’Orleans (cousin of the King Louis XVI) as its patron.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Some wear to the gilding and a little stacking wear.

One of 12 lithographs published by Ackermann London, in 1840/41 as part of a portfolio, “12 Views in the Interior of Guiana.” The original sketches were made by John Morrison who accompanied Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk on the exploration into what would become British Guiana. An albumen photograph of the upper portion of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India fully laid down on cardboard stock. The blind stamp, “FRITH’S/SERIES” is in the lower left corner. The image is 6 3/8 (16 cm) by 8 ¼ (21 cm) inches. The card is 10 (25.5 cm) by 12 (30.5 cm) inches. In pencil on the back in the lower left is written, “3067 The Taj Agra India.” Francis Frith commissioned and bought from other photographers for his series.

A lobed dinner plate 9 ½ inches (24 cm) diameter decorated with a sprig of cornflowers (?) in the center of the well surrounded with numerous single red or gilt flowers. The lip is decorated with richly gilt and enamel swags surrounding floral cartouches. The rubbed overglaze “VV” on the back is the mark for the Verneuilh factory. It dates from the 1780’s; possibly 1787 when Vanier entered a contract with the Verneuilhs.
