LARGE Chinese Western Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Hu Jar

This large and imposing pottery jar, of "hu" form, was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It is made from a fairly high-fired grey pottery. It has a particularly wide body with a relatively short neck that flares out into a wide mouth. There are three raised decorative bands surrounding its wide body. Unusual pottery bowl with hand molded snake handle. I cannot find any pieces similar in style to this although the reddish clay and heavy potting are reminiscent of Hongshan pottery. This came out of China and has a good petrichor and water absorption on the base, very old- at least 2000 to 3000 years old but probably older. W: 14cm/5.5in and H: 12cm/4.7in.

From our Early Chinese Collection, a very good Han Dynasty hu jar, most probably Western Han (circa 100 BC - AD 08), of well-known and documented form with a dish-shaped mouth, a molded animal frieze on the upper shoulder, and with two taotie mask handles on either side of the jar. Constructed of reddish earthenware covered in a green lead flux glaze that is somewhat crackled and has fired to an attractive brown in some spots, this jar has acquired a silvery iridescence from burial.

Antique Chinese Sung pottery burial jar traditionally used to house the ashes of the deceased, in a very light blue crackle glaze with bare foot. The lid is topped with a large crane shaped finial. This is a medium size Han dynasty green and amber glazed vase. It is pretty rare to a vase with dual colour glazed. The vase has a flatten base, without footrim, then everted uowards to a bulb shaped body and then towards a short neck and everted mouth rim. The base of the vase showed that it is produced from red pottery earth.
