19th century wooden netsuke of two frogs frolicking on differently sized peony buds with stems. Wonderfull quality carving (see finely incised petals texture) carved, very beautiful warm patina. Signed GYOKUSEKI on the bottom - there is Gyokuseki listed on p. 428 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, but this is much better quality carving than his usual work, probably a different carver with the same name. Length 2 inches.

Japanese Satsuma Earthenware square shape small Censer, Incense Pot, Meiji, 1900, 2 1/8" high, 2" square-top rim, supported by four(4) small bracket feet, the Gold and enamel painting are very small finely done. Each Panel is decorated with flying Dragon, Phoenix Bird and other flying Mythetical animals in round circling cartouche in the middle with accented by detailed design. The condition is good except some raised fine detailed gold paintings are worn.

19th century netsuke of half of a mokugye - a Buddhist gong in a shape of a fish with its head touching its tail, and a curled lotus leaf with a stem resting on the gong. Unusual combination of Buddhist symbols, great carving of fins and scales, leaf texture, eyes of the fish are inlaid with black horn. Expertly stained, beautiful warm patina with wonderful wear. Excellent netsuke. Length 1 3/16 inches.

An impressive antique 19th century Turkish Ottoman hand hammered, gilt copper alloy (Tombak) Islamic ablution basin with cover. Basin with bulbous body and large flaring rim finely hand embossed and chiseled in relief with three bunches of grapes on a vine which also issues scalloped leaves with scrolling tendrils, and three cartouches with cusped concave rim embellished with flowers...

This late 19th century export white porcelain duck is 7 ½” long, 4 7/8” high and 4” wide. It has a white body and beige beak and feet. Aside from some tiny blisters due to the firing, it is in great condition.

Japanese indigo cotton fireman's coat, with sashiko stitching and freehand paste resist decoration (tsutsugaki) of a cherry blossom, overlapping rings and striations. The front of the coat has four kanji characters on the lapel, and the inside of the coat is resist dyed with geometric designs and a round central emblem.

A Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting Shojo crouched in a typical posture, with his hand resting on his knee, while sleeping from the effects of too much sake, the kimono is finely carved with geometric motifs as well as the long hair on the back. Similar examples of the Nagoya carvers are illustrated in Meinertzhagen, MCI, p.844, Davey, MTH, p.189, no.570 and Lazarnick, NIA, p. .1063. Edo period 19th century Sizes: 3,3 x 2,7 x 2,6 cm. A Persian small brass or bronze box and lid from the Qajar period, 19th century. Of square shape with indented corners and exquisitely engraved with flowers and birds. A small circular reserve indicates which side of box and lid respectively are meant to fit into each other. Width "2 1/2 / 6.5 cm, height "1 2/3/ 4.2 cm. Condition: fine.

19th century Japanese small lacquered wood netsuke representing a theatrical mask of BUAKU used for demonic roles such as Kaminari, Emma-O or any nameless demon or scary devil. Uncommon image, excellent intense face, great patina. Crisp detailing, nicely lacquered, some wear to the surface. Signed RYUUN on the back bar - the artist is listed in NETSUKE MASKS by Raymond Bushell, p. 175, signatures 241-243. Height 1.05 inches.

A large Chinese Porcelain censor with blue monochrome exterior and white interior. There are three rounded bumps at the base that represent the three feet of a censor. The bowl measures about 5 1/2" high x 9 3/4" in diameter and dates to the Ching Dynasty. The condition is very good with some interior kiln flaw and glaze crawl. In the floral art of ikebana, the flower holder (kenzan) is placed in the base. The flower stems are planted on in. Sometimes a support of this shape is used as decoration, with the flower holder placed inside.

19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) of double gourd form carved and pierced with geometric designs. Nice work, pleasant feel of age, beautiful patina. Height 11/16 inches.

19th century Japanese bronze tea ceremony hibashi (long metal chopsticks for handling charcoal in hibachi brazier) with bronze working ends and handles covered in lacquered wood. These hibashi are for use in the winter time - summer ones are made entirely of metal. Finely made of bronze with high copper contents, beautiful lacquering with gold sunspots, superb patina, beautiful wear, pleasantly heavy. Length 10 inches.

Cast iron teapot. Very deep decoration. Nice quality of cast iron. Unusual interesting decoration, meticulous details (fineness of the dragon ties of the handle). Signed in relief on the back and under the lid. Difficult to date. Meiji or Edo ? only the translation of the signature could tell us the artist and the period. 19th century Japanese raku ceramic box for use in tea ceremony potted and painted to represent yuzu citron with leaves. Could serve as chaire (tea caddy for powdered tea) or kogo (box for incense). Wonderful hand potting, excellent depiction of fruit skin texture. Stamped with RAKU character on the body by the foot. Comes with newer kiriwood box and wrapping cloth. Very pleasant feel of age, well-used, in great condition. Diameter 3 1/4 inches, height with cover 2 5/8 inches.

A Nyonya plate painted with auspicious symbols of a peach, peony and Buddha hand citron. Nyonya wares are over-glaze poly-chrome enameled porcelains made in Jingdezhen in the Kiangsi province of China for the Straits Chinese, or Babas, whose female counterparts are called Nyonyas, hence the term Nyonya ware. Nonya wares were mainly reserved for festive occasions and special functions. Size: W. 23.2cm. Condition: Normal wear.

19th Century Chinese wooden carving figure of Buddha. 22cm high. there some small chipped and loosing some lacquer. Free from any repair.

The mid 19th century carved nut (tagua) netsuke is 1 ¾” long, 1 ¼” wide and 1 3/8” thick. It depicts a Shi Shi mask and an old man emerging from a cloth bag. There is an artist’s signature on the side. Aside from a few hair line cracks, it is in excellent condition.

19th century (late Qing Dynasty - 1890s to 1911) unusual Chinese scholar’s rock in a form of a large natural amber nugget. The piece is true Baltic amber, large for amber as material, can be viewed from 2 sides, and conveys a very good feeling of a lonely mountain with its surface weathered by years of exposure to wind and water. Wonderful internal energy in the piece produced by combination of shape, texture and color of the material...

A rare and very finely carved gourd container with ivory cover, illustrated and inscribed with the "Peach Blossom Poem" from the famous story "Hong Lou Meng" (the "Dream of the Red Chamber"), dated - "made in the tenth month of the twenty-second year of the Guanxu" - 1897. The cover depicts a dragon amongst clouds in pursuit of a flaming pearl and is signed - "carved by Lu Shu Yi". Condition - there is a stabilized body crack to the gourd - no other damages and no losses...

19th century boxwood netsuke depicting the head of himono (gutted dried fish). Initially food taken along on a journey, dried fish came to symbolize good luck and health. Beautiful realistic carving (appears to be a head of salmon), wonderful sharp detailing, clever use of one eye as himotoshi. Superb patina on wood, in excellent condition, very pleasant to hold.
