Statue of a "lohan" (Buddhist holy man) standing on a tall rounded base, his hands originally holding an implement (now gone). Votive box open at the back (lid missing). Wood, with large remnants of black and red lacquering, and gilding on face and hands. China, 18th century. Height: 18" (45 cm). Obvious signs of great age, otherwise very good condition.

This Buddhist sutra book was from Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka. The front and rear wooden covers painted red with random gold paint spatters. The sutra book contains 16 handwritten pages made from palm leaves, which are held between the covers with cord.

Young woman's katabira (unlined kimono made of asa, hemp or ramie) with long sleeves. It is made of Echigo-chijimi, which was woven in Echigo region, now Niigata prefecture. It is handwoven of choma (ramie) whose wefts and warps are hand-plied, and the surface has light shrinkage from twisted warps and wefts. It has hand-painted flower motifs. The snake is a symbol often associated with rebirth, transformation while the pumpkin is a symbol of fertility, abundance and prosperity in Japanese tradition.

Black glazed sieve guttus with a raised molding around the perforated sieve at centre. Pairwise cannelures on the cushion-shaped body. The ring handle placed at right angles to the straight spout. Ring foot reserved underneath.

This tea bowl sized dish is decorated in underglaze cobalt on two sides of the exterior with a rapidly-brushed floral design, and with a flower on the interior base. It is well-potted and raised on a low footring with a recessed base that is glazed and reveals chatter marks from the trimming.
