Francis Hopkinson Smith, American, 1838-1915, "Bath Abbey". This rare, early 20th C. etching by Francis Hopkinson Smith measures 9 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches, pencil signed and titled. Smith was an author, artist and engineer, writing many books but also known for his atmospheric watercolors and oils. In his early years he is credited with building the foundation for the Statue of Liberty. At the age of 50 he gave up his engineering career and devoted the rest of his life to writing and painting.
