A whimsical Bizen stoneware figural koro. A young man is depicted inebriated - sake barrel by his side (the hat cover and barrel form inokes the otherwise absent tanuki associated with sake and mischief.) The sake barrel holds the burning incense while a separate piece represents the boy's hat and forms the cover for the censer. The turret of a lonely outpost rises from the mountain peak formed by this small Japanese scholar rock set into a hand carved wooden base and enclosed in a wooden box titled Ko jinkaku (Small Armored Tower). The stone is 7 inches (18 cm) tall, 5 x 3 inches (13 x 8 cm). It likely was put together in the early 20th century.

A very unusual art nouveau style Kutani vase decorated with a jagged forest of pink trees on soft green carpet, butterflies circling the shoulder which breaks into a darkened cloud of moriage beads decorated with spiraling karakusa designs in slightly raised gold. Superb workmanship, it is simply signed Kutani-zo (made in Kutani). The vase is 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition and dates from the first quarter of the 20th century.

A set of two gilded and lacquered wooden Imperial memorial tablets dating from the Taisho period (1911-1925) on elaborate 3 piece stands; one etched with the name of the Meiji Emperor, the other noting the current emperor (at that time). This is a finely potted and enamelled “Over-The-Wall” famille rose Ogee Bowl. It shows three stem of bamboo tree drawn from the exterior of the bowl and then continues into the interior of the bowl with persimmons hanging on to the bamboo plant with the twig crossing over the rim into the interior of the bowl. A little distance away, there is a small butterfly flying towards the persimmons on the outside of the bowl. This form of painting or design is known as “Over-The-Wall” technique....

This is an old Chinese carpentry tool. It was used the same as today's carpenter's "chalk line". The bowl would be filled with powdered charcoal and the string would be pulled through the bowl, and a straight line would be snapped. The string would be rewound by tuning the "crank handle". One nice brush washer was made from one block of precious Zitan wood.
By purplish black tint, the rare wood piece was preserved very good without any defects and free of any restoration.
It was well carved in beautiful round shape with inverted mouth rim by decent proportion.

This Suanzhi wood stand was in strong and firm structure while enduring old patina was preserved well on the surface.
By an adequate size, it was used being put on the table for displaying bronze censer or other curiosities.
A very minute crack line was on the surface board. It didn't penetrate the board and was unnoticiable.

A very elegant pair of Antique Andon lamps dating from the Meiji period in the original storage box from a Kyoto estate. The box is dated Meiji 36 (1904) and stylistically these fit perfectly into that era, with a fine transparent red lacquer finish.
