Iron infuses the draperies of crystlized Shino glaze covering this traditional bottle shaped vase by Tsukigata Nahiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oni-Shino Ko-Tsubo (Small Vase). A fold in the side adds asymmetry and a sense of immediacy to the piece, taking away the sense of creation and putting it firmly in the natural world where nothing is perfect (except perhaps the scent of a plum blossom!)...

Rising from a round base to an elongated rim, it has been blasted by the inferno on one side, the molten ash circling about to form a Zen circle where it had been supported on its side in the kiln. At the narrowest part of the rim it has adhered to something else in the kiln, causing a break which has been filled with gold by the artist...

As it does not have a foot ring, it is decidedly deep, perfect for a cold winter day, and the warm colors inside, combined with the steaming green tea, would be fabulous...

Mint Hagi masterpiece chawan by star potter Seigan Yamane. This extraordinary tea bowl is covered by a wonderful color glaze on brown pottery. In my opinion it is the most aesthetic chawan that he made. The seal of the artist is stamped on the bottom.

Seigan Yamane was born in 1952, and started making Hagi ware in 1987. And then, he started his own pottery in 1992 and has ever been awarded a lot of prizes for his great work.

Massive natural ash glazed Shigaraki flower vase made by veteran potter Takahashi Rakusai IV.
Born in 1925, Takahashi Rakusai IV is one the most notorious Shigaraki ceramists of modern times. He was awarded with Intangible Cultural Property title in 1976. Currently his son Takahashi Rakusai V is in charge of the family kiln.
