Here is the next chawan from our collection of items of Human National Treasures: a wonderful Seto chawan by legendary artist Munemaro Ishiguro (1893-1968), enclosed in its originally signed and sealed wooden box.

In 1918, Ishiguro Munemaro set his goal of becoming a ceramist after seeing a spotted tenmoku tea bowl at Tokyo Art Club...

A slight deviation from the norm, here is a scroll depicting the character Tsubo by Shigaraki artist Koie Ryoji in liquid strokes, the outer lines dissipating into the paper canvas. Ink on paper in a dark cloth border and unusual metal glazed ceramic rollers. It measures 19 1/2 by 42 inches (49, 5 x 107 cm) and is in fine condition.

Mint and large Japanese pottery tea bowl of Hagi Ware, made by one of the most famous and creative potters of Japan, Seigan Yamane. Light brown clay is coated with colorful glazes.

Note: This is a special work by him. He made only one piece with this design.

Seigan Yamane was born in 1952, and started making Hagi ware in 1987. And then, he started his own pottery in 1992 and has ever been awarded a lot of prizes for his great work...

Wow I need that! is all I could say the first time I saw this piece by Furutani Taketoshi while visiting the Churokuen Kiln early this year. The tendrils of natural ash glaze wrap around the simplified form like the roots of some ancient Shinboku (God Tree). It is unpretentious, but stands out clearly as a masterpiece by this very talented young potter.
