A stratified bloc of hollowed out Shigaraki clay by female pottery pioneer Koyama Kiyoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen Yu Kaku Hanaire. A thick coating of blown natural ash glaze has settled on the shoulders, while the layers of earth below show a dusting of color on top, but rich red in the shadows with plenty of small inclusions for the eye to play with. A covered container made as an incense burner by Koyama Kiyoko slabbed and cored from Shigaraki clay and covered in glassy green motlen ash enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 13.5 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter, roughly the same height and in excellent condition.
Koyama Kiyoko was born in Sasebo, Nagasaki in 1936. Following the second world war the family moved to Shiga prefecture, eventually settling in the pottery village of Shigaraki...

A cone rises to a plateau in deep rust colors by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled, like all his work, “Untitled”. It is 25.5 cm (10 inches) tall, roughly the same diameter and in perfect condition, directly from the artist this winter. After forming and sculpting the shapes, they are bisque fired, then glazed and fired again at a relatively low temperature (Between 1000 and 1100 degrees, like Raku ware)...

This exhibition quality lyrical Momoyama styled Shino chawan is by Mino veteran potter, Yamada Seiji. Glazed in a uroi (wet looking) Muji-Shino glaze over some rapid iron brushwork, this chawan is exceptionally well modeled and has a wide variety of color tones running from pure snow white to yellowish and coral highlights...

A spectacular Oni Karatsu Vase by Inoue Toya of the Kyozan Kiln enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 10 inches (25 cm) tall 6 inches (16 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Inoue Toya (1942-2013), graduated the prestigious Nihon Daigaku in 1966, having spent his student years excavating ancient Karatsu shards and researching their techniques. He apprenticed under the multifaceted potter Nushi Ensai. In 1969 he opened his own kiln...

This rare little gem is made by Morihiro Hosokawa (b. 1938) who served as the prime minister of Japan from 1993 to 1994.

He is also the head of the Kumamoto-Hosokawa clan, one of the noble families of Japan...

A spectacular large bowl of igneous texture displaying a swatch of slick ash like a wet stone wall by Kishimoto Kennin enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Chawan. Truly a magnificent work, it recalls memories deep in the forest, at some shrine carved into the walls of a crystalline waterfall, unvisited and overgrown with moss.  The wide form fits pleasantly into the palm, and the masterful craftsmanship of this artist is obvious.
