Japanese mid 20th century bronze vase with swirling floral design by KURITA YUKIO. The vase comes with TOMOBAKO, or original artist signed wooden storage box. The vase measures 11 3/8" tall and 7" in diameter.

Miyashita Zenji (1939-2012) was born into the family of potter Miyashita Zenju, and graduated the Kyoto Municipal University of Art. Starting with the most difficult, he worked from Celadon, which relies on shape and extreme control of firing. He is held in the British Museum, Metropolitan New York, and Brooklyn Museum among a host of others.

Once again Abe Anjin has lived up to our expectations with his revival of Momoyama period potting techniques, a field in which he is a forerunner.  Here is a squat bottle blasted with a Rorschach spatter, testing our inner perceptions.  All about the clay has been vitrified into a lustrous red,and the base is like textured stone, showing the extreme temperature with which it was fired.

Today I would like to introduce another talented potter living outside of the traditional potting centers. This is a beautiful Nezumi Shino (Gray Shino) chawan by Sagae Eimei, and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This has an immediacy which speaks of our era, yet is based firmly in the pottery of the Momoyama period. It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter, 9.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Bizen ware has been made from 16th century for 500 years and well known as one of 6 old kilns in Japan. At the Bizen kilns, no artificial glaze is used and expressions are by just effects of burning fire woods. The effects are by flame and clay and by ashes...

Traditional style chaire which was first glazed to the shoulder and then wood fired for a haikaburi effect. This chaire is in perfect condition with lid, bag and signed box and measures 7.5 x 6.8cm. The chaire mouth is not quite perfectly round and the lid fits very tightly.

Yamada Masakazu, born in 1951 is a traditional Mino craftsman and has been president of the Mino potters Association and specializes in wood fired Shino, Oribe and haiyu pottery.

Pleasant crackle style chawan with Rimpa influenced design under and over the glaze. This chawan was made by veteran Kyoto native potter, Suzuki Soji who was a student of Tomimoto Kenkichi. Suzuki's chawan now days can cost 200,000 yen and more.

This chawan is in excellent condition and does not have a box.

Ceramics decorated by Zen monks are seldom seen and this piece is no exception. Two red enamel characters are boldly brushed in red enamel conveying the strong bond between Zen and the tea ceremony. The bowl is inscribed and named Taste of Zen (Zenmi 禅味), and dates to the 1970s, when Seki Bokuō 関牧翁 (1903 – 1991) was well into his abbotship at Tenryū-ji, one of most important, and certainly most beautiful temples in Kyoto...
