This is a pair of typical works of the California-associated artist who went by the "copyright brush name" of "MIMI JOY" (real name Mabel C. Heyde, according to the Hughes' dictionary of artists in California). They are executed in pastel (or, oil pastel?) and measure 5 3/4" by 5 3/4" in original white circa 1950's framing. Antique Japanese woodblock print by Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) entitled Snow at Ginkakuji Temple. Snow falls quietly on a two story building. The rocks and trees around the pond are capped with snow and figures stroll by with umbrellas.

The artist, Hasui Kawase is considered one of the major landscape artists of Japan. He was born the son of a silk merchant and studied both Japanese and Western style painting. He showed at the Tatsumi Exhibition of Painting at the age of 19...

Etching, 4 3/4" by 6 5/8" inside the mat, 10" by 12 1/2" in simple black strip frame, titled in pencil at left margin "A Bermuda Lane" and signed in margin in pencil at lower right by artist RAY ALLEN. I do not see a listing for an artist of this name. The work likely dates to about the 1950's I would think, and is probably still in its original frame. The impression is strong, with a distinct plate mark. Disregard false yellow colors in some of the photos, which are an effect of the camera...

This is a stunning, classic plein air style seascape painting (24" by 30", 29 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed) signed at lower left by California master artist HENRY LEOPOLD RICHTER (1870-1960). A probable original title, "SURF", is written on the stretcher. The handling of color, motion, and especially the balance of sunlight and shadow is quite impressive. Having viewed a number of other works by the artist online, this one really seems to stand out...

Measuring 16 1/4" by 21 1/4" (23 1/2" by 28 1/2" in its attractive and clean modern gold frame with liner), this is a beautiful impressionistic painting in oil by the noted orientalist French painter LOUIS MICHEL BERNARD (1885-1962). The subject could be a sunwashed port in the mountainous south of France, or, possibly, in Algeria or elsewhere in coastal North Africa, where Bernard spent much time. The artist was a student of Cauvy at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Algiers...

For the last four years, I have researched every aspect of this self-portrait to confirm its artist identity!! Today, I can confirm the artist of this self-portrait, it is ROY FOX LICHTENSTEIN!! I was able to match the 1956 signature to the “rather primitive notion of patterned linear repetition”, or unknown markings (which look like Hebrew) on the side of an airplane in the RFL’s drawing “AIRPLANE 1961”. Original Japanese woodblock print by 20th century master Jun'Ichiro Sekino (1914-1988) circa 1950s. Unusual column format (roughly 28" by 10" paper, 21" by 5" image), extremely unusual subject, signed "J. Sekino" in pencil lower right and numbered 67/100 lower left. In its original frame, not examined out of the frame but apparently in excellent condition. Sekino's woodblocks are found in the collections of most important art museums, including MOMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
