This exceptional oval 60" x 32" French Painting is Signed Gustave Bouvard?? The painting was purchased from an antique dealer in Baton Rouge, La and he said the painting came from Napolean Bonaparte's Brothers Estate. A rare, historical, early pastel on heavy paper laid to card drawing of a young Zuni indian girl in Arizona, unsigned, circa late 19th century, including the original gold mat, decorated with images of tipis and spears. The work measures 18" by 12" (entire mat) and 12 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat. Sadly, the old antique work has been damaged. There is a darkened diagonal stain that extends from upper right down across the front of the face and into the hair...

This 1862 oil on canvas by the British artist Alfred Vickers measures 11 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches, signed and dated l.l., housed in original frame, partial European label on back. Born in London, Vickers was a self-taught landscape painter, who exhibited at the British Institute and the Royal Academy.

At left a full hay wagon is pulled by an animal; at center a couple walks together; at right, three others take a break and chat. This could possibly be an American drawing after an English etching. The materials and framing look American, the scene less so...

Gouache and watercolor on grayish tan paper, 7" by 9 1/2" inside the present mat (14 1/2" by 17" as framed), signed at lower left by listed French academy artist PIERRE FREDERIC LEHNERT (1811-?). This is a beautifully executed poetic drawing by an artist who showed at 19th century salons in Paris. From auction records it appears that studies of shepherds and sheep were a staple of the artist's production. Condition is excellent...

The subject is a creek or small lake or pond at sunset. Born in Ontario, Canada, Gruppe was in Europe by age 20, where he explored France, Germany and Holland. I imagine that this work would date to that early 1880's period when he would have been in Germany...
