The Artist is the Victorian Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858), and the Print is from the book “The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants” (plate 9), published in 1841 by Day and Haghe London, Lithographer to Queen Victoria. PAIR of framed Chinese or Japanese landscape watercolor paintings in traditional style, each featuring a mountain landscape, a small river in one and a waterfall in the other running into the lake or ocean. Blue-roofed buildings pine trees add to the beauty of the scenes. Each has a red chop mark and some calligraphy at lower right, presumably the name of the artist. The watercolor scene depicts a tent housekeeping camp on the shore of a body of water, with four figures, all African-American, in the composition, making it therefore quite unusual and scarce. The date of execution might be circa 1880 I feel, given the dress and the primitive camp set-up. The work is an historical record of African-American life in the 19th century.
