A fine circa late 19th century watercolor painting of one of the famous narrow canals of Venice, Italy, the canal offset by sun-washed buildings, signed at lower right by listed Italian artist LUIGI LANZA (1860-1913). The work measures 7" by 11 1/2" inside the mat and 13 1/2" by 17 1/2" simply framed. A circa late 1940's to mid 1950's gallery label from Chicago remains affixed to the backing. This is a contemporary work, signed at lower right "Christopher Clarke" and dated there "83". Measuring 11 5/8" by 16 5/8" inside the mat and 19" by 25" as framed, the work reminds of accomplished watercolor painters like Frank Weston Benson, Ogden Pleissner, Chet Reneson, and others who skillfully rendered duck hunters and their prey. Oddly I don't see a listing for this artist but he was clearly very talented. Note the wet-on-wet technique in the sky area...

Powerful design, excellent clean print. Framed and glazed, not examined outside of frame. Print size 109 x 243 mm (9 9/16 x 4 1/4 inches), frame size 10.5 x 18 inches.

As Haku Maki aficionados know, Maki did many prints depicting the kanji for ox or bull. This one, Z-200b, is one of his great bulls. One of a small edition of 75, it is 12.5 in wide X 19in high. The print, created in 1999, is in excellent condition. For another wonderful example of Maki's ox-making, see Item#1452034 below--a brilliant Big Red ox.

The piece is likely by the noted Chinese-Californian artist George Chann (also known by his Chinese name Chen Yin-Pi) (1913-1995), judging from the distinctive technique. A scene of an adobe with the classic protruding wooden beams, a low wall, springtime pink/white flowering trees and a split rail fence completing the composition. The work is apparently unsigned. It is laid down (glued) to Masonite panel. It shows signs of having been rolled in the past--long parallel vertical cracks in the paint, as shown in several images. Most certainly it is by a listed artist but this one is a mystery...
