One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Impressionist oil painting of stands of white birch trees by a small lake or large pond, painted on the smooth side of Masonite panel, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (12 1/2" by 16" as simply framed), apparently unsigned. The scene suggests a northern latitude, perhaps high elevations in the United States, or Canada or northern Europe, but there is little to go on geography-wise. The artist was skilled and created a peaceful little painting in subdued colors...

A vintage etching of Sacre Coeur church in Montmartre district of Paris, circa 1945, pencil signed by the artist at lower right margin and bearing his red stamp at lower left margin. The unframed print measures 17 1/2" by 12 1/4". Paper is heavily browned with age, though evenly so; there is some discoloration in margins, and lower left corner is a bit bent. Frame with fresh mat and the margin issues disappear and you have a solid etching of Sacre Coeur...

One of 12 lithographs published by Ackermann London, in 1840/41 as part of a portfolio, “12 Views in the Interior of Guiana.” The original sketches were made by John Morrison who accompanied Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk on the exploration into what would become British Guiana. The sketches were developed by Charles Bentley into the drawings that were the basis for the lithographs. Printed in black with hand coloring.

A print I first thought could be Pennsylvania Dutch imagery, but which now appears to be of some European origin, perhaps the Appenzell area of Switzerland, or elsewhere in Europe. A Google search reveals that the imagery is actually used on the cover of a Spanish reader book, so perhaps this is a Spanish origin. Measurements are 17" by 13 1/2" framed. Condition is very good, with just some overall age toning of the paper and some light rumpling at bottom margin...

This is a watercolor signed at lower right by an unrecognized artist named "Andre" or "Audre", 11 1/2" by 8 1/2" (17 1/2" by 14 1/4" as framed), the subject a young girl in pigtails viewed from behind, playing a grand piano. The overall colors are a cool mix of white, black, silvery gray, and light blue, with pink accenting in her bow. The mat and silvery frame pick up the colors nicely...

A naïve Americana print, "Bears Bears Bears", numbered 1348/1375, signed at lower right by noted highly collected American 20th century folk art artist JANE WOOSTER SCOTT (1920-). Jane Wooster Scott grew up in eastern Pennsylvania and was exposed as a youngster to the vivid Americana atmosphere that remained in the region into the 1940's. She moved west to hopefully become a movie star but ended up remaining in Los Angeles, though she returned to the east for inspiration...

A print with some subtle color in the printing process, the subject typical houses along a canal, likely in The Netherlands, signed in pencil at lower right below the image "Van Gelden". On the reverse is a label giving the name of the artist, stating that this is a copper plate proof etching, published in Paris in limited edition. Measurements are 9 1/4" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 16 1/4" by 18" framed.

A miniature or small gouache hillside landscape painting (3" by 4 1/4"), 7 3/4" by 9 3/4" in silvery stand-up frame, signed at lower left "R. Becker". The artist is Russ or Russell Becker, according to a Christmas 1995 hand-written holiday note on the inside of the blue card to which this is affixed. I do not see an obvious artist by this name, but he was clearly talented. The scene appears western, given the reddish rocky outcrop. Condition is excellent.

Lithograph print of two little sisters, printed by Associated American Artists at mid century, signed in pencil at lower right by the popular, listed Sicilian-born artist JEAN CALOGERO (1922-2001). The print, 14" by 9 5/8" (19" by 15" framed), dates likely to the 1950's or 1960's. Calogero's colorful oils of children, and mysterious fantasy scenes including masks and Surrealist elements, are familiar to art lovers. This print has some paper browning but otherwise appears clean.

A watercolor painting of flowers (perhaps, zinnias) in a vase on a tabletop, painted in an impressionist manner, and signed at lower right by artist "Cara dee" or similar. The work measures 18 3/4" by 14 3/4" as framed. All photos taken through detail-dulling non-glare glass. Condition is excellent.

Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a tree in late autumn, the leaves still in their golden glory, haystacks filling the meadow. This work measures 8" by 10" and is unsigned and not framed. On the reverse is written in pencil "Oct 7 - 1939". More than likely this is by a listed artist but his or her identity will remain a mystery. Put a frame around it and this will shine.

Pencil signed by the artist at lower right is this contemporary offset color print, 8" by 10" inside the mat, 12 1/4" by 14" in simple light wood frame, the subject a poetic one of mother and daughter on a bench in a leafy setting, the girl reading a book, a picnic basket at right. BARBARA A. WOOD the artist is from Ohio but also has spent considerable time in California, and, I believe, Georgia. Her work, whether in oil or a graphic work, often features studies of figures and families...

A small unframed painting of a creek or pond in the forest, 3 3/4" by 5 1/2", signed at lower right and dated 1918 by early San Francisco artist ALICE MEUSSDORFFER (1871-1949). The work, roughly the size of an index card, is painted in oil on a thin card laid on a thicker card. Meussdorffer was born in San Francisco in 1871, the daughter of a well-known hat maker...

Miniature size watercolor painting of two old structures along a fence line in the fall, 5" by 5 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz". The watercolor probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, the artist was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio.
